Iker Casillas has given a public indication that if his playing situation doesn’t improve, whilst he would prefer not to, the thought of leaving is there in his mind.

In a small village on the outskirts of Madrid, Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas attended the ‘How to be a top sportsman’ event, where he addressed a group of school children and also fielded questions.
Whilst Spanish journalists are renown for the directness of their questioning, the youngsters were likewise straight and to the point with the questions they put to the Spanish international. The first answer sought, was how he feels about being on the bench for Real Madrid.
“Of course I want to play, but you have to respect the manager. They’re his decisions. Egotistically, a player always wants to play, but a good professional accepts it. I always want to be at Real Madrid, because it’s all I’ve dreamed of since I was a little boy. What I have to do is work hard in training even more, so I can play.”
Another direct question from the youngsters, was to ask Casillas if he has thought about leaving, if he doesn’t get more games.
“A player will go through times when he’s not the protagonist and it goes through his mind that he has to make a decision. I’m human, I’m a footballer, not a robot. Obviously I want to stay here, winning more titles with Real Madrid. I’ve been here since I was little, but there may also come a day when it’s better for me to make a decision. Right now though, my aim is to fight, battle and play every game.”
The seed of doubt in his mind exposed, Casillas went on to explain that whilst there’s no immediate chance of him leaving Real Madrid, he couldn’t rule that out in the future.
“If I wasn’t sure about staying, I would have told the President I wanted to leave in September, or last Christmas. I decided that I want to be a part of this squad though and for a long time yet. However, if in three months the situation hasn’t changed and if I were asked the same question, I might reply that I’m thinking about leaving.” |
