Bale future uncertain

Sir Alex Ferguson admits United may miss out on Southampton left-back Gareth Bale after Tottenham came in with a more substantial offer.

The highly-rated 17-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for the past two months.

Saints have already rejected an offer from the Reds - reported to be around £10million - and Sir Alex is unsure as to where the Welsh international will now end up after seeing Spurs enter the race.

"The bid we made for Gareth Bale reflected his potential," explained the United manager. "Southampton said no because they're looking for more money and they have every right to do that.

"There are a lot of things that go in to contracts nowadays, it's all about incentives. There are very few deals that are just straight cash deals.

"I'm not exactly sure what Tottenham have offered but I think they've offered more. So they're in pole position at the moment."

Sir Alex was quick to dismiss suggestions that Bale would be plump for a switch to White Hart Lane because Spurs can offer him guaranteed first-team football.

"I don't think you can guarantee that for any player," insisted the United boss. "I'm absolutely positive about that. Anyone that guarantees a player a game every week is wrong. The boy would need to assess the situation."
