Improving Barca face new test against Sevilla
MADRID, March 1 (Reuters) - Barcelona face the second of a quartet of crucial matches in a hectic start to the month when they visit their chief title rivals Sevilla on Saturday.Sevilla are just two points behind Barca in the table and a win for either side would give them an important psychological edge in the closing stages of the season.
Frank Rijkaard's side passed their first test with flying colours, turning round a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Real Zaragoza in the King's Cup to win through on the away goals rule after a 2-1 victory at La Romareda on Wednesday.
After the Sevilla showdown, the Catalans have another mountain to climb as they attempt to overturn a 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie.
The following weekend they take on arch-rivals Real Madrid in the 'clasico' at the Nou Camp.
With the critics rounding on Barcelona following back-to-back defeats against Valencia and Liverpool, Frank Rijkaard's side produced one of their best performances in recent months in their 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao last Sunday.
Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o scored one and set up another in his first start in nearly five months after a knee injury, while Ronaldinho, who had been under fire for appearing to be overweight, was back to his brilliant best.
They gave another impressive display against Zaragoza in the Cup, beautifully crafted goals from midfielders Xavi and Andres Iniesta allowing them to turn the tables on their opponents in the space of a little over five minutes.
Sevilla lost ground after being held to a 0-0 draw at Getafe last weekend, but they have lost just once at their own stadium this term.
The Andalucians will be doubly motivated in the wake of the incident in which coach Juande Ramos was knocked cold after being hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands in the midweek Cup tie against city rivals Betis.
Real Madrid, who were lucky to escape from a visit to the Calderon with a point after being overrun by neighbours Atletico in last weekend's 1-1 draw at the Calderon, are six points behind Barca in fourth place in the table.
Fabio Capello's side have another tricky city derby on their hands when they host Getafe on Sunday.
Real keeper Iker Casillas has admitted that his side are not playing well, but insists they are still in the running for the title race.
'Two of our direct rivals, Sevilla and Barcelona, play each other this weekend and then we play Barca in the 'clasico', he said. 'So lots of things can still happen and the situation in the league could change completely.
'Having said that, a defeat against Getafe would be a step backwards for us.'
Bernd Schuster's side beat Real earlier in the season and earned themselves a first ever place in the semi-finals of the Cup this week, but their away form bears no comparison with their record at the Coliseo where they have lost just once this season.
In the weekend's other stand-out match, third-placed Valencia host Celta Vigo at the Mestalla on Saturday.
Valencia drew 1-1 against basement side Gimnastic last week, while Celta are hovering just above the relegation zone after surrendering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Racing Santander.
