Zé set for second spell in Munich
Uli Hoeneß made one small but significant mis-statement when he addressed Thursday’s news conference in Munich, announcing Franck Ribéry as Bayern’s seventh signing for the coming season. There was a flurry of fingers among the huge throng of media representatives gathered at the Sheraton Hotel, as they counted off Sosa, Schlaudraff, Altintop, Jansen, Toni and Ribéry, a total of just six new names. A follow-up question revealed that general manager Hoeneß had included Zé Roberto in his calculation, although the Brazilian’s return to Bavaria is not quite 100 percent guaranteed just yet.
“We’ve agreed with Zé Roberto in principle on a two-year contract, but we still have to iron out a few small problems,” Hoeneß explained. The main area for clarification is whether the 34-year-old winger will continue to turn out for the Brazilian national team. “Our opinion is that it’s not good for a player who’s already a little older to be flying across the Atlantic five or six times a year,” the board director commented.
Copa Libertadores exit
“We’re under a huge amount of pressure next season, so we need full commitment to the club, especially from players of his calibre,” the general manager continued, expressing confidence that Zé “will decide to focus completely on Bayern Munich, and be prepared to give up his career in the Brazilian team.”
Zé Roberto, on the books in Munich from 2002 to 2006, is currently with Santos in Brazil, but Pele’s former club were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday. Santos fell 2-0 to Gremio Porto Alegre in the away leg, and although Zé Roberto contributed a goal to a 3-1 win in the return, Santos missed out on the final on the away goals rule.
Boulahrouz a red herring
Santos’s misfortune could be Bayern’s gain, as Hoeneß said Zé was now due in Munich “next week or the week after” for talks.
