Andreolli: "My first thanks to Facchetti"

MILAN - Inter's scouts first noticed him in the 2002/03 season when he was playing for Padova's Under-17 team and already a regular in the national side for his age group. He joined Inter on loan in July 2003, and signed a co-ownership deal the following summer before Inter bought him outright. Marco Andreolli, after making his Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia debuts for Roberto Mancini's team, took another big step forward last August when he played for Pierluigi Casiraghi's Italy Under-21 side. The defender has collected a number of Under-21 appearances since then, including ninety minutes in the first match to be played at the new Wembley Stadium.
After winning the Italian Super Cup and the Serie A championship with Inter this season, Andreolli has been called up to the Italy Under-21 squad for the Euro 2007 championships in Holland from 10-23 June. "I'm very happy to be able to play the Under-21 European Championships," Marco told inter.it. "As a player I'm just at the beginning and I still have a lot to prove, but I want to thank the club that has always believed in me for what is happening to me. In particular, I thank Massimo Moratti who has always said nice things about me, and I also want to thank Roberto Mancini who handed me my top-level debut and who has given me loads of advice that has helped me improve.
"I will always be grateful to my first club Padova, those who believed in me at Inter's academy where I had the chance to show my ability, and to my family who have always been right behind me. But my first thanks is for a person who gave me advice every time he saw me, and I will always remember this. I am obviously referring to Giacinto Facchetti. I knew about his great career and I was thrilled when I met him for the first time. He put me at ease by treating me like a son. I remember that Giacinto always told me never to get big-headed. I always remember those words because I realise I still haven't done anything.
"I would really like to win this Under-21 European Championship so I can dedicate it to Facchetti, as a thanks for what he has given me, to him who was the greatest captain of all the national teams in the world. But the road to winning is long and we have to work hard with coach Casiraghi, another of those who has believed in me, and who I thank.
"It is important for me to keep my feet on the ground and keep working with the same desire and humility that have brought me this far. In these last two years I have also been lucky to train with great champions. I hope they can continue to help me improve as a man and a player."

U21: Azzurrini's perfect start

Pierluigi Casiraghi’s new Under-21 side got off to a glittering start to their Euro 2009 qualifying campaign, crushing Albania 4-0.
The Azzurrini began their two-year era while the ‘old’ squad is still preparing for the European Under-21 Championships in Holland later this month.
The first goal for the next generation was netted by Treviso’s Robert Acquafresca, who got the final touch to Daniele Dessena’s cut-back from six yards.
Casiraghi fielded an all-attack 4-3-3 system at Pontedera’s Stadio Ettore Manucci with Giuseppe Rossi and Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco supporting Acquafresca.
Bianconeri midfielder Claudio Marchisio suffered an injury during that opening goal move and was replaced by Gabriele Paonessa.
There were two desperate goalline clearances from the Albanians, but they could not stop a splendid strike from Dessena.
Udinese’s Marco Motta burst down the right flank from Giovinco’s pass until Dessena flicked the ball up with his left foot to smash home the volley with his right.
Genoa defender Domenico Criscito has made a name for himself in Serie B and will return to Juventus next season. He sealed the 3-0 going into half-time with a fortunate angled drive that squirmed under the body of the Albanian goalkeeper.
Xhevair Sukaj’s shot off target was really the visitors’ only attempt in a first half that was utterly dominated by the Italians.
Giovinco shone in his role supporting the centre-forward and brought a tough save out of Samir Ujkani straight after the restart, as well as firing just over and setting up several good chances.
The fourth goal arrived eight minutes from time and once again Juve jewel Giovinco was involved. His assist sparked a classic counter-attack for Fiorentina’s new signing Arturo Lupoli.
Only in the final moments did Albania go anywhere close to troubling Andrea Consigli with a Gilman Lika free kick and deflected effort from the same player.
