LAS VEGAS, July 7 -- After missing his first seven shots of the game a fan shouted at Kings’ swingman Francisco Garcia that he needed to “pick it up”. Garcia took the advice and went on to hit six of his next ten shots to finish with a game-high 20 points in the 73-47 blow out win over Team China.
The Kings stretched their lead to as many as 28 points late in the third quarter. They dominated inside outscoring Team China 38-6 in points in the paint.
Sixth overall pick Yi Jianlian struggled throughout the game. He did not connect on a field goal until his 10th attempt at the 6:38 mark of the second quarter and finished with nine points (2-14 FG, 5-6 FT) and seven rebounds in the loss.
Kings’ lottery pick Spencer Hawes had a nice game in his NBA-debut, scoring 19 points (9-14 FG) on a variety of low-post moves and seven rebounds in the win. Justin Williams added a double-double with 17 points (7-10 FG) and 11 rebounds.
“I was a little nervous, but once we tipped it off, I was good to go,” Hawes said of his first pro game. “It’s just basketball, just at a higher level.”
Overall, Team China shot just 26 percent from the field (15-57 FG), compared to 44 percent (27-62 FG) for Sacramento.
NOTES: Kings’ forward Ron Artest was in attendance, his younger brother, Daniel, is on the Kings summer league roster. Also in attendance were team owner’s Joe and Gavin Maloof. Garcia commented on new coach Reggie Theus saying, “I am happy for him, I think the guys will enjoy playing for him and he knows basketball.”
