Reading boss Steve Coppell expects no friendly favours from his former club when the Royals visit Old Trafford on Sunday, but he doesn't fear defeat against United.
Coppell surprised everyone in the Premier League by leading Reading to eighth spot and his managerial colleagues voted him LMA Manager of the Year for the second year running. But he is expecting another tough season, if not tougher, as they look to repeat last season’s heroics once again on a limited budget.
"You find yourself in a state of nervous anxiety," Coppell told Reading's official website. "We’re anticipating a very difficult season. You like to think you've got enough but only time will tell, we’re not on the same financial footing as everyone else.”
The fixture list has not been kind to Reading. The Royals face United on Sunday, before entertaining Chelsea and Everton at the Madejski. It’s a tough start, but Coppell’s attitude is one of taking whatever he can get. “I don't think has anything to do with it, it makes no difference,” he adds. “I think teams last year recovered from a bad start.”
Reading began last season with a 3-2 win over Middlesbrough, but followed it up with losses to Aston Villa and Wigan. Coppell’s message to his players is simple: hard graft is required, but he won’t hit the panic button if his side fail to pick up any points against United and Chelsea. “People will make judgement calls after the first week,” he said, “but we know we just have to try hard.”
The Royals, who are without injured striker Leroy Lita, have lost just once during pre-season, against River Plate, but they have won six of eight friendlies this summer, including a 1-0 defeat of French champions Lyon.
manutd.com Scholes fit for Sunday
Paul Scholes is in contention for a place in United's starting line-up against Reading on Sunday.
The midfielder left United's Asia Tour early to have exploratory surgery on his knee. He is now over the problem and played the full 90 minutes of United's 4-0 friendly win over Dunfermline on Wednesday.
United first-team coach Mike Phelan, who took charge of the Reds XI in Sir Alex Ferguson's absence, says the coaching staff are pleased with Scholes' progress.
"It was good for some of the players to get some minutes under their belt and they all came through it fine," said Phelan.
"Paul came off the tour early which gave him an extra week or so. He's surprised quite a few of us, but he's a robust character. His injury is fine and he has been working hard in training. He's in contention for the weekend."
The news comes as a major boost for the Reds as Scholes was an integral part of United's title-winning campaign last time out. And, even with the summer capture of Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich, the 32-year-old is certain to play another prominent role as Sir Alex's men look to retain the Premier League crown. Lyon係點就唔知喇！但睇社區盾場波又唔覺得狀態真係好差je。
況且，以前曼聯就話慢熱je，呢幾年，一係就即刻熱一係就成季都唔熱嫁啦！
同埋我覺得R10同C7咁鬼熱血，一開波就哨嫁喇！
所以，攻就唔擔心！
