A worldwide iconFoster’s project will make the Camp Nou an international architectural reference point.
After 50 years of wonderful memories, the Camp Nou is looking to the future with optimism. The world-famous firm of architects, Foster + Partners, is to undertake the remodelling of the stadium based on the initial concepts of Francesc Mitjans. The renovated stadium will stand as a piece of architecture in its own right and is certain to become an international architectural reference point for the 21st century. According to information released today, the whole building will be contained in a clearly defined space, with a unified external appearance. The additional spaces and facilities will be completely integrated, both functionally and architecturally.
When the remodelling work is completed, visitors will enjoy a renovated stadium with the unique and distinctive image of FC Barcelona, and which will be completely integrated into the city’s architectural heritage. Seen from the street, it will be a very modern stadium, as it will when seen from inside, with spacious service areas and escalators that will take the spectators to the higher levels.

Identity: The roof and the external façade
The architectural proposal described here places a strong emphasis on giving the stadium a vital and distinctive presence within the urban fabric it is situated. The stadium will become well known not just for its distinctive appearance from within its seating bowl but also its dramatic new external architecture.
The design of the stadium’s exterior façade will allow for the stadium to transform itself between day and night and also between non-match days and match days. The stadium’s volume is enveloped within a mosaic veil of coloured tiles. The tiles are a mixture of coloured polycarbonate panels and coloured glass panels. These give the stadium a distinctive outer skin which will make a visual matrix of colour, shade and reflections.
At night the stadium will be energized by lights built into the façade to become a beacon to attract fans and respond to the excitement of the match itself. This appearance can be expected to place the stadium as a “must-see” venue for both football fans and architecture admirers who visit the city of Barcelona. It should be expected that the external image of the stadium will become a recognized brand for FCB.
Side Enclosure
The mosaic screen wrapping around he sides of the stadium is composed of an array of coloured polycarbonate panel tiles which embody the colours of FC Barcelona. The panels are fixed to a diagrid cable net which is tensioned between the roof level above he seating bowl and the ground. The accumulated effect of the screen will provide rain protection to the naturally ventilated spaces within the stadium including the public concourse areas.
From outside the stadium the mosaic tiles will create a vibrant effect of colours and reflections. From inside the stadium the tiles will filter the different components of the club colours into the various internal spaces.
External Facade Animated Lighting Effect
Integrated within the coloured tiles of the side enclosure are special lighting elements which mean that the entire external façade can be used for animated lighting displays. The entire stadium enclosure will work as a giant screen which can project moving full-colour images to the stadium surround. Such images can range from low-key ambient displays to vibrant and more detailed displays on event-nights.
The roof
The roof over the stadium carries an extension of the stadium’s external mosaic over the stadium seating bowl. The colours of the Club will also be seen in the soffit of the roof. The density of the colours reduces towards the inside edge of the roof where it blends into the sky. The roof enclosure is a lightweight translucent enclosure composed of coloured polycarbonate panels fixed to the top surface of the cable net structure.
Visually, the roof provides an architecturally lightweight presence above to the stadium. The roof is supported by an efficient two-way pre-stressed cable net system spanning across the large dimensions of the Camp Nou’s seating bowl.

Construction strategy
The remodelled stadium is designed such that its can be built with minimal disruption FCB normal football activity. The following are the main strategic objectives for the construction methodology:
• Avoid disruption to normal FC Barcelona’s football activity. All matches can be played as usual.
• The stadium’s overall spectator seating capacity suffers no reduction during the works.
• The new services road tunnel around the stadium is built around the outside of the existing stadium without affecting the existing structure.
• Primary new vertical circulation cores to the enlarged Upper Tier are built around the outside of the existing stadium.
• Roof construction can progress throughout the football seasons. Work would take place during the time between programmed matches and the work made safe and secure prior to each match.
• No temporary towers are required on the arena or over the seating bowl for the roof construction.
• The existing roof over the Tribuna can remain in position until the new stadium roof is completed over the west stand.
• The stadium remains open to visitors at all times. The stadium tour route may be diverted at some times according to works phasing.

Access and amenities
In terms access and circulation, the most dramatic change that will be enjoyed by spectators arriving at the remodelled stadium will be for those accessing the upper tier. Instead of long ramps or stairs, all spectators will travel up to the upper concourse level by mechanical escalators from ground level. Six escalator groups are distributed around the stadium set within the new band of superstructure around the Camp Nou. Spectators using these escalators will be able to enjoy views over the stadium surrounding as they rise up effortlessly the stadium’s new upper concourse level. Disabled spectators will have the use of lifts up to the upper tier.General match day amenities
The remodelled stadium offers a dramatic amenity improvement for all spectators. The general public spectators will benefit from a huge increase in the numbers of
toilets available inside the stadium. On the newly expanded concourses all spectators will have access to a much increased number of food and beverage outlets
which should be able to offer a wider choice for customers. All such outlets will also have queuing areas provide to avoid congestion of the concourse circulation.
The quality of environment on the concourse is dramatically improved. Natural daylight is encouraged into the circulation spaces to create a more agreeable ambience.
Disabled Seats
The remodelled stadium will be expected to provide adequate provision for disabled spectators. Places are provided at each tier level and on all sides of the stadium. A large proportion of the disabled places are located at the rear of the lower tier since these locations will be readily accessible without the need to use any lifts. Disabled locations in the middle and upper tiers are located on dedicated platforms between vomitories and will be accessed using lifts from ground level. All disabled places include for an adjacent companion seat.

ViscaBarcaInter: Selling the Mini Estadi to build this giant bag of Skittles? How many Epilectic fits is this thing going to cause?
...
Barcoslav: I'm worried we are selling 250-300m worth property for some lighthouse causing epilepsy. This property is a guarantee that we can survive some possible future economic troubles, and I found this a bit risky. It would be much easier if I could see some analysis how much more money this Nou nou camp would generate per year, I hope it's more than just 6.000 season tickets extra.
...
McLaren: I hate it, i actually think its a shit thing of d'Art Contemporani. Its sucks really much, looks like a piece of vanilla cake with m&m's on it. Looks horrible, thesame idea of the Allianz Arena, i would prefer a copy of the colloseum in Rome 1000000 over this idea of the 21st century that makes me throw up.
I hoped Allianz was a unique thing and not much do i care about that team and that country but its disgusting too see it has become a ideology.
Damn...really a big DAMN they could have done something well.

雲呢拿蛋糕+m&m:icon071: Phil Ball:...Maybe it's just me, but the wonderful tradition and culture of this club, forged through the difficult years under Franco and sustained by the city's astonishing ability to survive, adapt and innovate, is indeed something to cherish. But it gets a little tiresome when little-big-men like Joan Laporta, who has happily assumed the mantle handed down to him by his equally power-seeking predecessors, decide to ram it down your throat, for reasons entirely linked to his own desire for immortality.
The architects who designed both Les Corts and the Camp Nou were Catalans, which is how it should be. Barça have always welcomed foreign influence, but only because they were confident enough in their own ability to already show what they had achieved. The Camp Nou was financed entirely by club members ('socios'), who bought bonds and season tickets for up to five years in advance of the 1957 inauguration.
This time around, Norman Foster won the competition put out to tender, and so he gets the contract, but the scenes this week and before the game, with Laporta showering his unctuous phrases of admiration for 'Sir' Norman (the title was repeated lovingly, at the end of each sentence) made me feel slightly ill ' as if this were the new face of football, removing itself ever further from the people who actually make it tick ' removing it up into the gods, up into a metaphorical fourth tier of the already giddy Camp Nou, from where it will be impossible to actually see any football, as if that mattered anyway. And when Laporta rounded it all off with 'Barcelona is more than a club, and you, Sir Norman, are more than an architect' I'm afraid I was reaching for the sick-bag.
Sir Norman is going to re-model the stadium for a cool 250 million, which will put another six thousand on the gate every fortnight and turn the outside of the stadium into a sort of enormous wedding cake, with multi-coloured hundred-and-thousand confectionery sprinkles dotted all over the surface. It's supposed to reflect Gaudi's work of course (clever chap Foster ' did his homework), but just give me the rows of backsides any day.
Far from being voyeuristic, it just seems to me to be closer to the heart of the matter, or to the seat of it. Foster is originally of good northern English working-class stock, but moving football into the post-modern age seems a decidedly middle-class venture, further designed to knock the soul out of the game.
Call me a cynic, but for me the venture was all about Laporta, not Barcelona. The stadium's fine, for pity's sake. Just design a nice plaque (1957-2007) and nail it up it over the entrance, play an exhibition match against a World XI, give the money to charity and then get on with the next fifty years...
