I just set him as a striker as default one. Use the top right hand corner scroll-down. And then go to set player instruction, pull the mentality three to four clicks towards ATTACKING, and that's it.
But, remember to set an centre attacking midfielder at his back at please make sure that Fred has a forward partner who is good at passing also. I use Julio Baptista as Fred's partner. He contributed 10 assists and 9 goals in 13 games also.
And I use Robinho as one of the winger to send send ball for the two strikers. Setting Fred as a target man is also a good idea when you want to focus on Fred to score, with another striker concentrate on assisting Fred.
That's my experience. Let's see if it is helpful.
