新浪體育訊 前利物浦球星科威爾的轉會再次引發了爭議，他昔日東家利茲聯隊的球迷對澳大利亞人轉會加拉塔薩雷表示了憤怒，他們認為科威爾不該去這支球隊。
八年前利茲和加拉塔薩雷在聯盟杯中交鋒，兩名利茲球迷在客場被加拉塔薩雷的球迷用刀子刺死，當時科威爾還效力利茲聯隊。由於那次慘劇，利茲和加拉塔薩雷之間一直充滿仇恨，這次澳大利亞人和加拉塔薩雷簽了為期兩年、週薪4萬英鎊的合同，令利茲球迷感到震驚。
利茲球迷俱樂部的主席費爾說：「我們很多人都為科威爾的決定感到震驚，球迷們認為這是一次未經深思熟慮的決定，像是對利茲的球迷捅了一刀。科威爾當年和利茲以及受害者家屬一起經歷了這起慘劇，但現在卻仍然和加拉塔薩雷簽約了，對於我們來說，那個特殊時期的一個利茲隊員現在卻要為加拉塔薩雷的球迷賣命，這令人難以接受。」另一些球迷的聲討更為激烈，他們斥責科威爾是一個叛徒，他只會對金錢效忠。
科威爾上一次轉會也引發了爭議，2003年他和經紀人聯手操作，迫使利茲只以600萬英鎊的低價將他賣到利物浦，如今再次轉會，又讓利茲球迷難過。對此，球迷陣營中也有一定的爭論，有人說澳大利亞人只跟著錢走，但也有人說這只是他在職業上的選擇而已，不該受到太多約束。

伊斯坦布爾法庭週三認定一名土耳其男子兩年前刺死兩名英格蘭球迷罪名成立，判決他入獄15年。
其他四人也因參與最終導致這兩名球迷死亡的鬥毆，而分別被判入獄三個月零22天。
2000年4月，利茲聯(列斯聯)與加拉塔薩雷(加拉塔沙雷)在伊斯坦布爾進行歐洲聯盟杯
(歐洲足協杯)比賽。利茲聯的兩名球迷在賽前的街頭打鬥中被刺身亡。
