Kiwis reach Nigeria
(FIFA.com) Friday 24 April 2009

New Zealand have booked their place at the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Nigeria with a 2-0 win over Tahiti at North Harbour Stadium on Friday despite playing half the youth football showdown a man down.

Zane Sole's powerful header from a 28th minute corner and Andrew Milne's third goal in as many games three minutes later put New Zealand firmly in control of match they needed to win to overtake a Tahitian side who began the day atop the OFC U-17 Championship standings on goal difference.

"When we went down ten men, we played like a senior international team not a junior team. We were disciplined, focussed with shape and a lot more composed with the ball," said New Zealand coach Steve Cain.

"Playing with ten men for 45 minutes, they could have easily crumpled under the pressure but our players showed a maturity beyond their years. There were ten very strong New Zealanders out there and they did their country proud today."

Earlier in the day New Caledonia beat Vanuatu 1-0 to clinch third place in the round-robin tournament.

Matchday 1
New Caledonia 2-5 Tahiti
New Zealand 3-0 Vanuatu

Matchday 2
Vanutau 1-4 Tahiti
New Caledonia 0-2 New Zealand

Matchday 3

Kiwis call up teen for South Africa
(AFP) Thursday 7 May 2009

New Zealand has named 17-year-old West Bromwich Albion striker Chris Wood in its squad for next month's FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009.

Wood made his English Premiership debut last month as a substitute against Portsmouth and New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has been closely following his progress.

"When I first took the job in 2005, I said age wasn't a barrier to selection, and that if we found a young guy we thought was good enough, we'd put him in the team," Herbert said.

"Chris has gone to a good club, spent a decent amount of time in a very competitive environment and been good enough to pave his way through to coming off the bench in a Premier League game. That speaks volumes and he thoroughly justifies his place in the squad."

Wood joins an experienced core of players in the 23-man squad for the FIFA Confederations Cup, which starts on 14 June. The team will be led by Blackburn Rovers skipper Ryan Nelsen, who was part of both New Zealand's previous FIFA Confederations Cup campaigns in 1999 and 2003.

Joining him are Simon Elliott, Chris Killen, Shane Smeltz, Duncan Oughton, David Mulligan and Mark Paston, who were part of the 2003 All Whites squad in France. New Zealand will play friendlies against Botswana, Tanzania and Italy before the FIFA Confederations Cup, in which the Oceania confederation champions have been grouped with Spain, Iraq, and South Africa.

The Cup line-up includes the leading teams from each of the six football confederations, along with hosts South Africa and FIFA World Cup™ champions Italy.

Herbert keen for NZ to join Socceroos in Asia

Following Australia into the Asian soccer confederation could have enormous development benefits for New Zealand and may be considered in the future but not at present, All Whites coach Ricki Herbert has said.

New Zealand have qualified for next month's Confederations Cup in South Africa as Oceania champions before crucial World Cup qualifiers later this year.
They will meet the fifth-ranked Asian side home and away in October and November to determine whether they will return to South Africa next year for the World Cup finals.
Australia qualified for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany from Oceania then moved to the Asian confederation, where they lead Group One and are almost certain of going to South Africa.
"From a development, competition, exposure, sponsorship and finance point of view going through Asia would stand you in good stead," Herbert told Reuters in an interview before the All Whites left for a training camp in Botswana.
"If you're a side good enough to get through the Asian route then I think you would be a side capable in a World Cup of doing something."
Herbert, however, said the strength of remaining in the11-team Oceania confederation was the route it provided for global tournaments, particularly for age-grade sides.
"It's ideal for what we have got at the moment," he said."In most cases it guarantees an ... entrance to the World Cup(for age-grade tournaments).
"At the moment it's great being part of this and we will keep maximising the opportunities we can.
"But in the longer term, the exposure and how good we need to be with the opponents on the world stage (in Asia), then the question is out there."
When Australia qualified for the 2006 finals through Oceania, they had to meet fifth-ranked South American side Uruguay in a home and away playoff.
That playoff route has changed to go through Asia, but Herbert said the strength of the Asian confederation was also improving, and qualification would not necessarily be easier.
"You have probably got Japan, Australia, South Korea heading (Asia) but sides directly behind them are very strong. We went and played Thailand and they're a good side," Herbert added of their recent 3-1 loss in Bangkok.
"(Asia) is strong and getting stronger and ... at some stage (that pathway) could be arguably as tough."

"It was a good opportunity to get back on the field," said New Zealandcoach Ricki Herbert. "Tanzania were very quick but the pleasing thingwas that they didn't get in behind us too much. Fatigue certainly cameinto play but the first spell was particularly pleasing."
