City manager Mark Hughes is now facing a striker crisis for Sunday's derby, with Craig Bellamy the only one of the club's senior strikers likely to be available.

Robinho, Roque Santa Cruz and Benjani Mwaruwari are all injured and Carlos Tevez is rated extremely doubtful to face his old club.

Man City to contest second Adebayor charge

By Soccernet staff

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has confirmed the club will appeal Emmanuel Adebayor's FA charge of improper conduct.

Adebayor is already starting a three-match ban after accepting a violent conduct charge for a stamp on former Arsenal team-mate Robin van Persie during last weekend's win at Eastlands.

He was handed the charge of improper conduct for running almost the length of the pitch to celebrate his goal in front of the Arsenal fans in the 4-2 victory which sparked ugly scenes in the away end.

Hughes confirmed City would lodge an appeal before the September 30 deadline and said: "We have got time to construct our arguments, we have a view and we have a longer period of time to obviously make our feelings known in that respect.

"I think it is important not to take emotion out of the game. It is part and parcel of what football is about and that's why it is such a huge sport worldwide. The circumstances of the game and the amount of criticism and vitriol that Ade had to take wasn't nice.

"It was the first time he had come up against former team-mates, some of those team-mates prior to game couldn't shake his hand before the game and all these things come and maybe affect somebody's emotional state in a game.

"Obviously the celebration was an outpouring of that and I have to say he didn't leave the field of play. He slid on his knees - that's his normal celebration but there are other things we can add to that and we will do.

"I think there are comparisons to be made possibly between Ade's celebration and the reaction of Van Persie when he scored."

At the time of the incident Adebayor explained he got caught up in the emotion of the moment and said: "People talk about us as being football players and the money we earn, but just because we are fortunate it does not mean we need to take abuse.

"If you were to abuse a man in the street for over an hour he would react and it would be a worse reaction than a goal celebration! There is only so much abuse a man can take until he reaches breaking point."

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe insisted that top footballers need to act as role models and said there should be a debate about whether to impose point deductions for clubs whose players are guilty of serious misbehaviour.

Sutcliffe said: "We all know it's a tough, emotional game but we can't continue to have these sorts of scenes. We will be looking at what suggestions there could be.

"Do we need to look at clubs losing points? If a player gets banned for three games, it's easy to put someone else in there if you are a big club, though for small clubs it's more difficult. It's just a personal idea but football should be looking at all it can do to make sure that the image of the game.''

The minister also said he believed the FA had acted correctly with the ban on Adebayor for the stamping incident.
