The French football authorities defied calls last night to replay their controversial World Cup qualifying match against Ireland despite outrage over Thierry Henry’s handball.
Giovanni Trapattoni, Ireland’s Italian manager, had led demands in his adopted country for the match to be restaged, but a senior official at the French federation confirmed that there had been no such discussions in Paris, only celebrations at the goal that secured their place in the finals in South Africa next year.
“Look, we feel sad for the Irish,” the official said. “It was a really tough, important game. But s*** happens. It was a refereeing mistake just like others in the match and others in qualifying games. We are not discussing a replay.
“We understand there is a lot of upset in Ireland and England about this. Fair play started in England, but not even the English would take it so far as to replay.”

Martin Hansson's failure to spot Thierry Henry's handball in the run-up to France's winner over the Republic of Ireland in Paris last night has led to unforeseen consequences in the referee's home country of Sweden.
A leading Swedish newspaper has issued an apology to the Irish people, and has asserted that it hopes Hansson and his assistants will never be allowed to officiate in a top match again.
"There are approximately 80 million Irishmen around the world. We guarantee they all feel pretty bad today," the article in Aftonbladet reads.
"But I sincerely hope there are three Swedes that feel even worse.
"They are Martin Hansson and (referee's assistants) Stefan Wittberg and Fredrik Nilsson."
"There will be no World Cup for Ireland and I assume that Team Hansson has also forfeited its right to continue to take charge of major international matches.
"Anything else would be a further insult to the Irish nation."
