Arsène Wenger says Arsenal are working as hard as they can to get Thomas Vermaelen fit to face Manchester United.
But even if the Belgian does miss Sunday's Premier League clash, he is expected to return in time to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on February 7.
"The good news we have on Vermaelen is that there is no fracture," confirmed Wenger at his pre-match press conference. "We have to assess his knee today, there is still a small chance that he will play on Sunday.
"We will do the maximum to get him fit but at the moment it looks unlikely. It should be a very short-term injury.
"It looked to be a two-month problem, now at the latest he should be ready for the Chelsea game."
Wenger also confirmed that Eduardo's hamstring injury will keep him out of the United match, while Nicklas Bendtner is also a doubt as he struggles for match fitness after making his comeback from a groin injury as a second-half substitute at Aston Villa.
"Bendtner looks at bit short," said the manager. "But I have not picked the team yet. To start Bendtner is going through my mind, but he has only one training and 20 minutes of action in three months.
"The only thing that is for sure from Wednesday night is we have lost Eduardo to a hamstring problem."
Abou Diaby and Fran Merida will also miss the game, along with long-term absentees Robin Van Persie, Kieran Gibbs and Johan Djourou.

Manchester United midfielder Anderson is wanted by Lyon, according to the Brazil international's agents.
Anderson's future at Old Trafford has been the subject of recent speculation after he was left out of the squad for United's last two games.
Reports have claimed that Anderson paid an unauthorised visit back to Brazil and he is in line to be fined two weeks' wages.
He was linked with a move to Vasco da Gamain his homeland, although the club have played down suggestions they could sign the 21-year-old.
However, Lyon may be able to offer Anderson a route out of United after the player's representatives confirmed the interest from the French giants.
A spokesman for his agents Gestifute told The Sun: "We are working towards some authorisation with United.
"The subject could be closed this weekend."
There are suggestions that United will look to have the highly-rated goalkeeper Hugo Llorisincluded any deal which would see Anderson head to Stade Gerland.

Chief exec also confirms that he is to remain at Fratton Park.
After a night's sleep, Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie has elected to remain at Fratton Park despite being "angry and frustrated" at, along with Avram Grant, having little say on player sales.
Two of the club's better form players, Asmir Begovic and Younes Kaboul, have been linked with moves to Tottenham Hotspur, and Storrie has claimed that they have joined Harry Redknapp's White Hart Lane outfit, although neither club has yet confirmed the deal.
He told Soccernet: "We have spoken about it. We are both angry, frustrated and fed up, but neither of us are quitters. I don't intend to quit now I've slept on it, and although I cannot speak for Avram, from what we have talked about this morning I don't think he will quit either. And, let's face it, we both have good reason to walk out!"
Storrie alluded to how his omission from key decisions has undermined his position.
"I am no longer involved in the finances, I am not involved in the transfer negotiations, and Avram doesn't know what players are being sold.
"The two best players on the pitch in our last game against West Ham, Kaboul and Begovic, have been sold to Spurs, and - who knows? - it might not stop there.
"That's not good for Avram, so you can understand why he is frustrated and angry about it, but at least it will keep the club alive for two or three months, maybe until the end of the season, which will give you all time to sort out what is going on here."

Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara has joined Portsmouth on loan until the end of the season.
O'Hara made 14 appearances for the south coast club in the first half of the campaign, scoring his only goal to date in a 3-1 defeat at Blackburn in November.
The 23-year-old briefly returned to White Hart Lane earlier this month when his loan deal expired, but has been persuaded to return to Fratton Park by Pompey boss Avram Grant.
Tottenham said on their official website: "Jamie O'Hara has joined Portsmouth on loan until the end of the season. The 23-year-old spent five months on loan with Portsmouth earlier this season, making 14 appearances and scoring once."
O'Hara joined Spurs' academy in 2003 and has featured 56 times for the north London club, netting seven goals. 《太陽報》曝出猛料稱，特裡和布里奇的法國模特女友瓦內薩偷情，這可能帶來爆炸性的影響。該報稱，這件事情的曝光，猶如對布里奇背後捅了一刀一樣。
《太陽報》稱進行了長期的調查，而特裡一直試圖控制媒體不要曝出這一消息，在去年11月，特裡曾贏得年度好父親獎，但現在看來，這成為了一個諷刺。
