The Soccernet Quiniela - Week 14 - Social networking

Right - as Sinatra never said, I'd better do this Ed's way. But before I completely humiliate myself and manage some miserable score, allow me a little indulgence with regard to the quiniela theme.
In England it's called the 'pools', as I'm sure you know, but before the internet it was traditionally done individually and sent in by post, or handed in surreptitiously over the betting-shop counter, as if it were some kind of a crime. In Spain, it's part of the social fabric. Not only do people all over the country get together and do collective quinielas, Saturday mornings are always reserved for a trip to the betting shop - there is always one on the street in any two-horse town - and if there isn't you can probably nip into your local bar and whip off a quick 'unoequisdos' (one, X, two) and have a natter with your neighbour in the queue, before returning to the street and visiting the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker. People do the quiniela to be social. It's a weekly rhythm, and being betting addicts in general, the Spanish love the whole thing and then they love to talk about it.
The state-run betting shops are not places of shame and darkness in Spain, and the people who work there are invariably pillars of the community, knowing everyone and known by everyone. If you really did win a big one, privacy would be something of a problem. I do tend to really do the 'kiniela', as it's spelled in Basque, more out of a social obligation than a real feeling that I might win something, and the woman in my local place always accuses me of thinking too much about it. 'Those kinielas never win' she insists, and indeed, one of Spain's biggest wins in recent years was achieved by an 86 year-old granny from Vigo who had never been to a football match in her life, and who simply put down the crosses in the same squares every week.
But no matter how much I waffle on, the challenge to preview the matches (as opposed to my usual habit of looking backwards) cannot be avoided, so here goes. 8/10 Alvarez? No problemo, hermano.

Tenerife are statistically the league's worst travellers, but they also have a negative goal difference at home. The thing in their favour for this game is that Madrid have bad memories of Tenerife from the 1990s, and games there always seem to revive these atavistic nightmares. The Tenerife fans reserve a hostile reception for Madrid, but something tells me that the merengues are on a bit of a roll, despite the hiccup in Lyon. Tenerife are fighters, but I can't see them getting a result. Away win.

As a tennis player of yore once exclaimed, you cannot be serious (!), but let's go for it. At the risk of being accused of Catalan baiting (sigh), our leaders are looking a tad tired and emotional of late, and Malaga are a better side than they sometimes appear, and will fancy their chances against a side that are looking understandably a bit frayed at the edges. Barca did well to hold off Stuttgart in midweek, but Malaga have won their last two away games and are on something of a run. I reckon it'll be a draw. It could even be the turning point of the season (I mean, I might win some money).
