Magpies could be without first-choice pairing against Blues
The Football Association has confirmed that weekend footage of Mike Williamson's challenge on Johan Elmander will be looked at.
Bolton brushed aside Newcastle United 5-1 at The Reebok while the visitors also finished the game a man light as Fabricio Coloccini was sent off.
The Argentine defender was sent off for elbowing Elmander, although Williamson's tackle on the Swedish striker went unpunished.
Elmander was running towards Newcastle's goal when Williamson stood his ground and appeared to make contact with his head.
The FA's disciplinary chiefs will view footage of the incident which could result in the defender being charged and subsequently convicted of an offence.
A spokesman confirmed: "We will be looking at the footage and establishing firstly if the referee saw it and secondly, if he didn't, whether he would have shown a red card if he had."
Magpies boss Chris Hughton could now find himself without both of his first-choice central defenders for Saturday's clash with champions Chelsea at St James' Park.
