Luiz and Kjaer top Chelsea wishlist
Chelsea are stepping up their bid for Benfica centre-back David Luiz, but are also looking at Danish star Simon Kjaer as a back-up if they cannot persuade the Brazilian to move.
Carlo Ancelotti has earmarked a top quality centre-back as his main priority for the January transfer window, as the injury problems to skipper John Terry and Alex, alongside the sale of Ricardo Carvalho to Real Madrid in the summer, have left Chelsea vulnerable at the back.
Benfica blocked Luiz's move to Stamford Bridge last summer demanding the full £38 million stipulated in his buyout clause.
The Portuguese club have since softened their stance, but are still holding out for a minimum of £25 million, while Chelsea have so far made two bids - one of £17 million and the second of £21 million plus right-back Paulo Ferreira - but neither have been accepted.
Negotiations are still ongoing, but Chelsea have also been tracking the progress of Wolfsburg defender Kjaer.
A leading agent close to the negotiations told ESPNsoccernet: "Chelsea desperately want a centre-half, and while they have been trying to buy Luiz for some time, they have also been very impressed with Kjaer.
"They have a list of about five centre halves, and there is little doubt they will buy at least one of them this January transfer window."

Mario Balotelli’s injured knee sidelined him again at Eastlands last night but the Italian striker has set up a tantalising showdown against Wayne Rooney in three weeks by suggesting the England forward is not even the best goalscorer in Manchester.
The City star said yesterday his knee should not require surgery, putting him in line for a possible return in the Manchester derby on February 12 at Old Trafford.
That would guarantee Balotelli a lively reception from Rooney, who he says is inferior to him and fellow City forwards Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko. He also says United fans have asked him to join their team.
Balotelli said: ‘Rooney’s good, but he is not the best in Manchester. Think about this one: Balotelli-Tevez-Dzeko. Is it not good enough?
‘Can you see anything better than this in the world? Me neither, not even at Barcelona or Real Madrid.
‘We are stronger. We only lack conviction, the rest is all here. We can win now. Dzeko is a good person.
‘United fans, they stop me in the street and tell me, “Mario, come to United”. Honestly.
‘But I’m dreaming of beating United, because I know how much this means to our fans. They are splendid with me.’
Balotelli has been told he may need the second operation of his season if his right knee does not respond to a period of inactivity. The 20-year-old, though, has already ruled out surgery.
In an interview in Italy, he said: ‘I still feel some discomfort, but the meniscus is fine. There is no need for another operation, only treatment and strengthening. A few weeks and I’ll be back.’
Having managed Balotelli at Inter Milan, Mancini is revered by the young forward. Yesterday the forward suggested Mancini was far superior to his last Inter coach, Jose Mourinho, but it is clear his problems with homesickness in England have troubled him.
Asked about the issue, Balotelli said: ‘Sometimes I just had no wish to do anything at all, I’d shut myself inside my flat. Even Mancini’s sons were trying to get me to come out. It’s still early, though. For this year and one more I’ll stay at City, where I feel well.
‘I live right in the centre of Manchester, in a modern building, with a splendid view. One day my brother Giovanni was in the street, looked up and said to his girlfriend, “How nice, Camilla. Look, they’re doing fireworks in Manchester.” But it was me, shooting them off from the ninth floor.
‘The neighbours adore me, though. When I score they stick little congratulatory notes to my door. At Christmas they presented me with bottles of wine. But I do not drink.
‘Mancini’s the most important coach I’ve had. He’ll become No 1 in the world. But, in terms of human qualities, he is 2km ahead of Mourinho. Wait, make that 10km.
‘Mourinho is the No 1 coach in the world but, as a man, he still has to learn manners and respect. Mancini continually repeats to me, “When I joined Sampdoria from Bologna (early in his career) I already felt I was the best of all, then I realised how hard I had to work to improve”. ‘I’ve got the message.’
n a wide-ranging interview, Balotelli revealed that he rates United’s Nemanja Vidic as the best defender in the Barclays Premier League and also says he was surprised by the ability of City teammate Adam Johnson. ‘He has great technique,’ he said.
Balotelli said he has a quad bike that he has ridden around the centre of Manchester and he has been learning English by reading film subtitles.
As for Mancini’s grasp of the language, Balotelli said: ‘He must say nothing. His English stinks. But it is improving.
‘But Mancini is lucky. He has an owner who only asks him: “What do you need?”’

Wheater completes move to Bolton

Bolton Wanderers have signed Middlesbrough defender David Wheater for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £2.3 million with £1.5 million in add-ons.
Wheater was a highly-rated young centre back when he broke into the Boro first team on a regular basis in the 2007-08 Premier League campaign and it was thought he would be signed by a top-flight club when they went down the following season.
The 23-year-old stayed with Boro as they attempted to bounce back from the Championship, but with the club languishing just above the relegation zone they have opted to cash in on the player. He made 157 appearances for the Teesside club, scoring 11 goals.
Wheater has signed a deal with Bolton which runs through to the summer of 2014, but the news is sure to lead to further speculation over the future of fellow central defender Gary Cahill, who has been linked with Arsenal throughout the transfer window.
Wheater will be available to make his debut in the game against Chelsea on Monday evening.
Bolton boss Owen Coyle said: ''First and foremost we are absolutely delighted to get a player of David's quality into Bolton. The hunger that he has shown in wanting to come to the football club has been first class.
''There has been a lot of competition for his signature and again this shows a willingness on our behalf to invest in young players. The club have parted with good money to secure the services of a very talented player who has been involved with England squads before.
''We want him to be involved at that level again and to do that he will have to play well for Bolton Wanderers, however he has arrived here with a real desire to achieve that. He has a great character as well. He will integrate into the group straight away and it all adds to the fantastic spirit that we have within the squad.''
Wheater added: ''I met with the manager and we had a good chat about football. I had a look around the facilities and it was a really easy decision to make.
''From what I've seen there is a really great atmosphere at the club and a real buzz about the place and I'm looking forward to working hard and showing the manager what I can do.''
Chelsea face wait on Lampard fitness

Chelsea could be without talismanic midfielder Frank Lampard once again after he limped out of training on Wednesday with a calf injury.
Lampard has had a scan on the problem with the results due on Thursday, but manager Carlo Ancelotti must fear another lay-off for a player who had previously had few injuries throughout his career.
The 32-year-old spent three-and-a-half months on the sidelines earlier this season with groin and hamstring problems after being injured in the 2-0 win over Stoke City in August. He has made only six starts since returning, and a total of nine starts all season.
The Blues have won just two of their last ten Premier League matches, leaving their hopes of defending their crown in tatters.
Losing a player who scored 22 Premier League goals last season will be a huge blow to Ancelotti's hopes of salvaging something from the season.
