French footballer Cantona 'to run for presidency'
A French newspaper reported Monday that famed former international footballer Eric Cantona is running for the French presidency. The daily claims to have a copy of a letter Cantona sent seeking the 500 signatures from mayors necessary to run.By FRANCE 24 (text)
Popular French daily newspaper Liberation reported Monday that iconic French football star Eric Cantona has sent a letter to mayors across his native France seeking the 500 signatures necessary to run for the presidency.
The newspaper printed what it claims is a copy of the letter, in which 45-year-old Cantona pledges to represent “the millions of families who have been forgotten” and states that he felt compelled to take action at a time when France faces “difficult choices”.
Cantona has yet to confirm the reports and his French website is currently under construction.
Back in October 2010, Cantona caused a media stir when he appeared to call on French citizens to bring down the banks by withdrawing all their money. At the time he stated, “The three million people in the street, they go to the bank, withdraw their money, and the banks collapse. That’s a real threat, there’s a real revolution. No weapons, no blood, nothing at all. It’s not complicated. Then we’ll be listened to in a different way.”
“King Eric”, as he is affectionately nicknamed, is considered one of the greatest players in the history of Manchester United, where he played from 1992 until his retirement in 1997. The footballer is also an actor, and starred in the internationally acclaimed Ken Loach film, “Looking for Eric”.
