A reporter drew Pochettino’s attention to a recent interview with Harry Kane, stating: “He said the responsibility for recent results should be with the players and not the manager.”
Pochettino began his reply by stating: “They don’t have a manager, they have a head coach. I am a head coach.”
Asked to explain the distinction, Pochettino suggested that his role in Tottenham’s hierarchy is less wide-ranging and more specific than his previous job at Southampton.
“I think it’s very different,” he said. “If you are the manager, you decide many things about the club. But if you are a head coach, your responsibility is to play better and try to improve the players and to get positive results.
“The head coach is not the same as the manager. If not, why am I not the manager? I am the head coach. In Southampton, I was a manager. My responsibility was not only to coach the team. Here I am a head coach - a head coach is head of your department. My department is to train the team.”
Pochettino was consequently asked to elaborate on what he did differently at Southampton, but he was loath to discuss the issue, and Tottenham’s chain of command.

Tottenham appoint former Southampton talent scout Paul Mitchell as head of recruitment and analysis. Mitchell joined the Saints in 2012 after doing the same job at MK Dons following his early retirement because of injury.
He was credited with finding Southampton's summer signings Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane.
"Maybe Spurs felt they couldn't buy our football players so they had to bring in other people," Saints manager Ronald Koeman told BBC Radio Solent.
Wilshere undergoes surgery to left ankle
Jack Wilshere has had successful surgery on his left ankle and will be out for approximately three months.
The England international sustained the injury to his ankle ligaments during the Premier League match with Manchester United on Saturday at Emirates Stadium.
An assessment with a specialist confirmed the need for an operation and the 22-year-old had successful surgery to his ankle in London on Thursday afternoon.
Jack will now commence his injury rehabilitation programme with the Arsenal medical team.
Everyone at the club wishes Jack a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch as soon as possible.
