From Boston Herald:According to a league source, Payton reached his decision after more
than a month of painful deliberation following a trade from the Lakers
that sent him to the Celtics along with the rights to Rick Fox.
Fox, plagued by neck and back pain, announced his retirement Thursday.
Payton, a lifelong West Coast resident who was upset by the prospect of
uprooting his family after just a year in Los Angeles, has a year
remaining on his contract worth approximately $5.3 million.
Payton's apparent change of heart fits in with the ongoing stance of
Danny Ainge, the Celtics director of basketball operations who has said
all along that he expected Payton to join the team. Ainge was
unavailable for comment yesterday.
Doc Rivers, the first-year Celtics coach who recently ``bumped into''
Payton in Las Vegas, where the point guard has an offseason home, said
he was guardedly optimistic.
``I have no reason not to believe that he'll be here,'' Rivers said. ``I
know that he's working out very hard, and that he's working out every
day. The way I look at it, if it happens, it happens.
