Snooker's man of the moment Marco Fu is refusing to rest on his laurels as he looks forward to the Northern Ireland Trophy, which starts on Sunday.
The 29-year-old from Hong Kong won the first ranking title of his career at the recent Royal London Watches Grand Prix, beating Ronnie O’Sullivan 9-6 in the final in Aberdeen.
But the Asian star is hungry for further success and resumed his practice regime immediately after his triumph. “Since then I’ve been looking at videos of the matches I played in Aberdeen and working on a few technical things,” said Fu.
“It’s great to know what I can achieve and it gives me a lot of belief going into the rest of the season. I usually start the season slowly so to win the second tournament means I can really look forward to the next few events.
“It had always been my goal to win a ranking event so it was a big weight off my shoulders.”
Fu faces Adrian Gunnell in his opening match of the Northern Ireland Trophy at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on Sunday at 7.30pm.
“Last year in Belfast I lost to Dominic Dale in the first round, but I really liked the venue and I’d like to stay for longer this time. Adrian won his qualifying match 5-0 so he must be in good form and it won’t be easy,” Fu added.
The tournament, which is supported by Belfast City Council and the Northern Ireland Events Company, runs from November 4 to 11 and fighting for the title at the Waterfront will be the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, Stephen Hendry, Steve Davis, defending champion Ding Junhui and home favourites Joe Swail and Mark Allen.
