Bayer Leverkusen captain Jens Nowotny has been ruled out of action for the rest of the season after sustaining a serious knee ligament injury against Nürnberg on Saturday.
Sporting director Rudi Völler told the club's official Web site: "Jens is out for the rest of the campaign for sure but he will be back for next season, of that I am convinced."
The injury threatens the career of the 32-year-old stalwart who missed the 2002 World Cup finals and much of the following season due to a cruciate knee ligament. It is not yet clear whether or not the player will undergo surgery.
The loss of the club captain comes as a severe blow to Leverkusen who meet Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions' League later today
