Magic Gate is Sony's proprietary "data encryption and authentication" technology that was intended for use with various online services. Before the Playstation 2 launched, Sony made claims that users would be able to use the 8MB memory cards to aid in online shopping, e-bidding, and other such services because the cards would store personal information, securely and efficiently, along with normal game data. Of course, many of Sony's ideas were either highly exaggerated or ended up not panning out and Magic Gate is no different. It is now just a remnant of the past (or possible future with the PS3) of the PS2 hype and only aids in safely storing game data.
