Lleyton Hewitt will meet Roger Federer in their much-anticipated Wimbledon semi-final after the men who have won the past three titles in London completed straightforward and impressive quarter-final victories.

Playing on centre court, Hewitt benefited from the nerves of his opponent, Feliciano Lopez, who was playing on the game's biggest stage for the first time. The 23-year-old Spaniard made a series of dreadful errors in the vital stages of each set, aiding the increasingly confident Hewitt in his 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory.

At the same time on court one, Federer seemed to dispel any lingering doubts about his form by taking apart the big-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez with a similar 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) result. Challenged only occasionally by Gonzalez's big shots, the Swiss was at his languid best, seeming to play almost in slow motion at times against his maniacally swinging opponent.

While their semi-final showdown has come a game earlier than Hewitt would have liked, given he was relegated to the third seeding behind Andy Roddick, it is a mouth-watering prospect nonetheless. Federer has won his past seven matches against the Australian, including their quarter-final here last year, but the Swiss has been beaten in his semi-final at both the Australian and French Opens this year and Hewitt seems in particularly dogged form.

Advertisement"It is going to be a tough match, there is a reason he has won the tournament the last two years," Hewitt said. "It is like a final for me, I have to go out there, play my game and see what happens."

Federer, however, did not give any future opponent cause for optimism in his quarter-final victory.

"Once you get into a tournament you start to feel better," he said. "Today, the whole match I was tense because you know it's a chance to reach another semi-final. But I thought I played well.

"I think if I keep on playing like this, I think I can beat any player with the level I'm playing. I thought I played well against Ferrero and again today, so I am happy with that."

Given his limited preparation, Hewitt's run to the last four for the first time since 2002 - the year he won the title - has been impressive. The left-handed Lopez's big serve and, for a Spaniard, unusually attacking game had been expected to trouble the Australian.

However, Hewitt imposed himself on the match, coming to the net on his serve far more often than he had earlier in the tournament and making Lopez come up with winners - something he found increasingly difficult the more the pressure mounted.

But while his own game was impressive, it was difficult to gauge just how well Hewitt is prepared for his semi-final given how often he benefited from the Spaniard's errors in crucial situations.

Lopez had started the match strongly, grabbing a break of serve in the fifth game of the first set. But, serving at 4-3 and 30-30, Lopez missed a straightforward backhand volley, then served a double fault to hand back his advantage.

Then, at 5-6, the nerves the Spaniard were suffering in his first grand slam quarter-final were obvious as he committed three consecutive unforced errors to give Hewitt three set points, the last of which he converted after the Spaniard flubbed another half-volley into the net.

The pattern repeated itself in the second set, Lopez gift-wrapping Hewitt three set points as he tightened up while serving at 4-5 and handing over set with the sort of limp backhand into the net that would have a Saturday afternoon club player screaming in frustration.

But instead of venting his concerns, Lopez slumped into his courtside chair, seemingly resigned to his fate. That was not made any better by Hewitt, who played a brilliant third set tie-breaker to bludgeon his way into the semis.

Federer also had to work hard in the early stages of his quarter-final but once he seized a late break of serve in the first set his momentum built.

There has been speculation that the Swiss seemed more vulnerable this year than he had in past. However, while his matches might not have been quite so one-sided as we have come to expect, as he cruised past Gonzalez it seemed difficult to imagine his grasscourt winning streak - now at 34 matches - was likely to end soon.

"To be through again is fantastic," said Federer. "It's my third in a row and Wimbledon has been great to me."

Hewitt was equally confident, telling BBC-TV after the match: "Last time I made the semis I went on to win the tournament, so hopefully that's a good omen.

"Roger is going to be a tough match, it's like a final for me."

The other quarter-final matches scheduled for play on Wednesday were between Andy Roddick of the US against Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean, and 2002 runner-up David Nalbandian of Argentina versus Thomas Johansson of Sweden.
