Villarreal have targeted Mario Melchiot and Josemi in their search for a new defender.The Yellow Submarines managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the coming season and are busy looking for new recruits.
Villarreal boss Manuel Pellegrini wants players who can cope with a long season, including European involvement.
Birmingham's Dutch defender Melchiot and Liverpool's Josemi are the two names at the head of Pellegrini's list.
General manager of Villarreal, Jose Manuel Llaneza, says that initial contact has been made for the two targets.
"The contacts have been initiated in conjunction with the orders of the coach," said Llaneza.
"After the great success of the last season it is necessary to follow in the same way."
Josemi only arrived on Merseyside from Spain last summer, but his involvement for Rafa Benitez's side may be limited in the coming season.
Melchiot played a full part for Birmingham last term, but the lure of Champions League football could be the key to his signing should Villarreal go for the former Chelsea man.

Middlesbrough have held preliminary discussions with Liverpool midfielder Salif Diao.
The Senegalese international, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Birmingham, is looking for an exit from Anfield after failing to establish himself as a first team regular under either Gerard Houllier or current boss Rafa Benitez.
Diao's agent Charles Collymore has now told skysports.com that Steve McClaren's side have entered into 'tentative discussions' regarding the 28-year-old's future, just days after Liverpool signed midfielder Bolo Zenden from The Riverside on a free transfer.
Collymore revealed that preliminary discussions had taken place, and emphasised that should the Teessiders firm up their interest his client would be keen to join the Uefa Cup contenders.
"We've had tentative discussions, nothing more at this stage," Collymore told skysports.com.
"They are the sort of club we would be interested in, they have a good support, good management.
"If they wanted to go further we would certainly be interested."
The former Sedan man has also been tracked by a number of English and Spanish outfits after three years in The Premiership, and is looking to find a club that offers more regular first team football than he has experienced at Anfield to date.
"We want to be sure to establish the best options for Salif," Collymore continued.
"We want more football which he is not going to get at Liverpool."
