Spector goes out on loanJonathan Spector will spend the 2005/06 campaign on loan at Charlton Athletic. The American defender will join up with his new team-mates immediately and will remain at The Valley until May 2006. Spector's agent Steve Kelly said: "This is a huge opportunity and he is extremely excited. It's a great chance for him to pick up Premiership experience."

Now Rio declares his hand
Rio Ferdinand has told Manchester United he has no intention of signing the £100,000-a-week contract which has been on the table since the end of last season. The England defender has been negotiating with United since late spring over a £25million deal that would tie him to Old Trafford for the next five years. But it emerged last night that Ferdinand will not sign. A source close to the player said: "The offer that is currently on the table has been rejected. He wants to stay at the club, but if Rio is to put his name to a new deal then there will have to be an improvement in the terms."

Forlan to make Prem return?
Newcastle are looking at former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan. The Geordies are desperate to sign a new striker after releasing Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert. They have reportedly already made enquiries about Forlan, 26, who now plays for Spain’s Villareal. Although the Uruguayan striker was a flop at Old Trafford, he was joint winner of the European Golden Boot with Arsenal’s Thierry Henry last term, with 25 goals in La Liga. And that has prompted Newcastle to prepare a bid, expected to be at least £6m, as Forlan’s value has risen for his Spanish paymasters.
