The Ghana international is now Chelsea's top transfer target after Steven Gerrard opted to sign a new contract at Liverpool.
Essien has declared a desire to leave the reigning French champions, but Lyon are refusing to allow the powerful midfielder to depart on the cheap.
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has met with Jean-Michel Aulas this week, with the Lyon chairman having rejected an 'extraordinary' offer for Essien.
Up to now, The Blues are believed to have bid £16 million for the French Footballer of the Year, but Lyon are rumoured to want €45 million (£31 million). :icon101:
Lyon remain hopeful they can persuade Essien to stay at Stade Gerland for another season, despite the player's apparent yearning for a move to The Premiership.
Mourinho understands that Lyon are reluctant to sell their prized asset, but the Blues boss is still determined to entice the African to Stamford Bridge.
"I just know the player wants to join us," Mourinho told Sky Sports News. "We would like very much the player to come to us.
"His club didn't accept our offer, so I think for the moment, there is nothing to say.
"Now, I think we made an offer the club didn't accept. They don't want to sell, so maybe they have a very good financial situation.
"Maybe they have a good and logical dream to be champions again in France and to do good in the Champions League.
