Early morning reports had Woodgate about to announce his retirement after apparently breaking down in training again.
This prompted Freddy Shepherd to say these moving words:
"I'm shocked and sad to hear this.
"But I can tell Woody that there will always be a place for him at St James' Park. We will do anything we can for him - and I mean anything.
"Obviously there will be all sorts of complications, compensations and insurances to sort out, but if his contract is cancelled and he is able to, we will bring him back here without any pressure and we will do all we can for him.
"When he signed for Real Madrid he asked us to keep his number six black-and-white shirt ready for him and it will always be there. He has not played for Real Madrid but to be fair to them they have never once complained to us."
But by tea-time Woodgate rubbished the reports when he stated:
"My rehabilitation has been going exactly to plan. There’s been no breakdown and I’m going to Austria with the rest of the squad next week as planned."
But perhaps most interesting was the Chronicle's line that Real Madrid have already paid Newcastle the full £13.8m for the defender. No wonder Shepherd was able to be so charitable....

:icon101: Jonathan Woodgate insists he has never thought about quitting football.
Woodgate, who moved to Real Madrid 12 months ago from Newcastle United, is yet to make his debut for the Spanish giants due to a persistent thigh injury.
Reports in the British media suggested that Woodgate had suffered a fresh injury relapse and he was considering quitting, but the Middlesbrough-born stopper insists he is now fully fit.
"At the moment my leg is doing good and I am fine, contrary to reports in England, I am doing really well," he told Sky Sports News.
"The last year has been hard for me, as you will realise, but I am back now and, hopefully, I can stay fit.
"I was kicking a ball perfectly and then one paper said I had broken down, I don't understand where it came from, my leg is fine."
Woodgate, who was not taken on Madrid's tour of the Far East, is set to link up with team-mates at the pre-season training camp in Austria.
"I haven't played for one year, so I will take my time but, hopefully, I will go and the manager will play me," he continued.
"I have confidence in my body and I am very optimistic my leg will be fine in any game I play."
The ex-Leeds United star stressed that he had never thought about retiring.
"Why would I when I have been given the opportunity to play for the best club in the world?" he said.
"I have never won anything and I am hungry to win things, any young lad would give their right arm to do what I am doing, I have worked hard to get here, I am only 25 and it has never entered my head to give up football.
"I have got to earn my right to a first-team place and it will not be easy, it will be hard, but hopefully I will be up to the challenge."
The England star says he is not thinking about an international recall.
"I spoke to Mr Eriksson a while back, but first and foremost, I have to play for Madrid," he continued.
"If I am playing well for Madrid, then I am sure England will come along.
"I want to repay the president and the supporters and I want to play here for as long as I can."
Woodgate also revealed his hope that compatriot Michael Owen remains at El Santiago Bernabeu.
"I haven't spoken to Michael as he has been away, but I hope he stays," he stated.
