Mourinho To Gerrard: You’ll Regret It
8/1/2005 10:29:00 AMChelsea’s outspoken manager Jose Mourinho says England midfielder Steven Gerrard may regret his decision to remain at Liverpool rather than join the Blues’ star-studded roster.
Gerrard, 25, seemed to be on the verge of signing for Chelsea this summer before a change of heart saw him pen a new long-term contract with the club he has grown up with.
"It will be a loss for him, for his career. He can say ’I was European champion at Liverpool’ and that is correct," Mourinho told The Times.
"But I can say to him in the next 10 years we will compare trophies at Chelsea and Liverpool. And he’ll lose."
Mourinho said that signing Gerrard would have been a great boost to his team.
"Gerrard is a great player and we want an English core very much," he said.
"We normally play a midfield triangle and you can imagine that Gerrard and Frank Lampard, with Claude Makelele just behind them as protection, could be a very strong team but I think it is Gerrard’s loss more than Chelsea’s.

車路士領隊摩連奴指利物浦中場謝拉特選擇留隊將是一個令他後悔的決定。該名廿五歲中場今夏幾近加盟車路士，不過最後決定續約留隊。

Mourinho reckons Gerrard will come to regret his decision to stay at Anfield after performing an amazing u-turn in the summer to stick with Liverpool.
Mourinho said: "When he decides not to join this club, I think it will be a loss for him, for his career.
"He can say 'I was European champion at Liverpool' and I have to say that is correct. But I can say to him in the next 10 years we will compare trophies at Chelsea and trophies at Liverpool. And he will lose."
Benitez, however, hit back today and insisted Gerrard will be playing in a Liverpool team more than capable of winning plenty of honours over the coming seasons.
He said: "I like it when Jose talks about us because it means we are doing well
"He must be worried about us. I think we will do very well this season. Steven Gerrard will win many trophies with us - hopefully starting this season."
