Everton's search for reinforcements before a potential Champions League campaign has prompted them to open negotiations with Manchester United over the possible £3.5m transfer of their England player Phil Neville.

United's out-of-favour utility player, who earns a bonus-related £50,000 a week and is contracted until 2009, has been told he can leave by Sir Alex Ferguson after starting only 12 Premiership games last season. United hope to bolster their squad in other areas and, to that end, there has been dialogue at boardroom level with the Everton chairman Bill Kenwright over a transfer.
