Toon eyes on Keane
Tottenham striker Robbie Keane is the latest striker to cross Newcastle's radar.
The Magpies are desperate to bolster their threadbare strikeforce and have been linked with a clutch of big name forwards.
A move for French star Nicolas Anelka failed to get off the ground, while Michael Owen would appear to be beyond The Magpies' reach.
With just over a fortnight until the transfer window slams shut, it is being suggested that Newcastle chief Graeme Souness is ready to pursue other options - with Keane a reported target.
Republic of Ireland international Keane is a far from certain starter at Spurs, with Martin Jol having Jermain Defoe, Fredi Kanoute and Mido in his squad, and Newcastle could be ready to make a move for the forward.
Newcastle have been linked with Kanoute as well, but Keane has emerged as a more viable option. However, it is not clear if Spurs will look for a straight cash deal or use the Irishman as bait to lure Jermaine Jenas to While Hart Lane.
Spurs have had an offer for Jenas rebuffed, but they could have a major bargaining chip in Keane and it is rumoured that talks between the two clubs could take place later in the week.
