Sydney and the Kangaroos will play an AFL match in Los Angeles next January, the first time the league has gone to the United States for 16 years.

The two top-eight sides will play at the UCLA athletics field on January 15 as part of Australia Week, which aims to boost this country's culture and business in southern California.

Melbourne easily beat West Coast in Portland, Oregon in 1990.

The AFL regularly plays off-season exhibition matches in London and has also held official pre-season games in South Africa and New Zealand.

This will be the sixth AFL match in the US since Melbourne played Geelong at Honolulu in 1963.

Exhibition games have also been held in Canada and Japan.

"The AFL is the biggest sporting code in Australia, with our attendances and our participation rates, and we've always prided ourselves on the excitement, passion and unique skills of our game," said league operations manager Adrian Anderson.

"We are delighted that two of our clubs will....show off the unique skills of our only indigenous sport as Australia aims to strengthen its links with the powerful Californian economy," he said.

"The club proposes to take all players on its list for a period of seven days and we will use the time as a training camp whilst also taking the opportunity to visit a number of leading sporting teams in southern California with which various members of the club have developed relationships with over the years," said Sydney chairman Richard Colless.

Colless said his club had formed a support group to use the AFL and the Swans to boost business opportunities in California.
