Harvard and Princeton have been ranked the top universities in America in the rankings of the prestigious US News and World Report.
The news comes after Harvard was earlier this week ranked No 1 in the world in the Shanghai Jiao Tong league table, which looks at research output. The US university was one place ahead of Cambridge, which itself squeezed Stanford into third place.
Stanford is joint fifth, with Duke University, in the rankings announced today. Yale is ranked third, followed by the University of Pennsylvania. The Californian Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia and Dartmouth College make up the rest of the top 10.
For the first time, the rankings, which are based on research status and teaching reputation, include criteria on the number of students who come from poor backgrounds and who qualify for grants.
A separate table shows the University of California, Berkeley, to be the top public university in America, with the University of Virginia second and the University of California, Los Angeles, third.

【 明 報 專 訊 】 《 美 國 新 聞 與 世 界 報 道 》 （ U.S. News & World Report ） 公 布 最 新 全 美 最 佳 大 學 排 名 ， 哈 佛 大 學 及 普 林 斯 頓 大 學 連 續 3 年 雙 雙 榮 登 全 美 「 最 佳 大 學 」 ， 普 林 斯 頓 大 學 今 年 更 是 連 續 第 6 年 榮 登 榜 首 。
跟 哈 佛 大 學 三 度 平 手
雜 誌 根 據 大 學 的 財 政 狀 、 校 友 向 母 校 捐 獻 、 學 生 畢 業 率 、 教 職 員 評 分 等 指 標 評 分 ， 選 出 最 佳 大 學 和 最 佳 研 究 院 。 結 果 哈 佛 跟 普 林 斯 頓 今 年 再 打 成 平 手 ， 第 3 位 則 為 耶 魯 大 學 。 全 美 最 佳 20 所 大 學 中 ， 只 有 排 名 20 的 加 州 大 學 柏 克 萊 分 校 是 公 立 大 學 ， 其 餘 全 屬 私 立 學 校 ， 而 柏 克 萊 分 校 亦 蟬 聯 美 國 最 佳 公 立 大 學 。
10 間 最 佳 大 學 陣 容 不 變 ， 排 名 亦 與 去 年 相 若 ， 但 麻 省 理 工 學 院 排 名 由 去 年 第 5 位 降 至 第 7 位 ， 而 加 州 理 工 學 院 則 由 去 年 第 8 位 ， 微 升 1 級 至 第 7 位 ， 與 麻 省 理 工 齊 名 。
大 學 排 名 是 選 校 重 要 參 考 指 標 ， 但 亦 有 批 評 指 排 名 的 計 分 制 度 ， 忽 略 不 少 重 要 的 教 育 價 值 。 今 年 排 名 調 查 的 大 學 回 覆 率 ， 由 2002 年 的 67% ， 降 至 今 年 57% ﹔ 有 大 學 教 職 員 拒 絕 回 應 同 儕 對 大 學 的 評 分 ， 但 該 部 分 佔 整 體 評 分 的 25% ， 令 調 查 的 認 受 性 進 一 步 受 到 質 疑 。
「 6 連 冠 」 的 普 林 斯 頓 大 學 發 表 聲 明 ， 表 示 滿 意 大 學 向 學 生 提 供 優 質 教 育 ， 但 同 時 強 調 排 名 無 助 反 映 大 學 是 否 適 合 學 生 。
