Everton goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has indicated he is ready for international duty again - at the age of 39.

There is a growing clamour for Martyn to be recalled to the national squad as back-up to Tottenham's Paul Robinson for the World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland.

Martyn, who won the last of his 23 caps in 2002 when he was at Leeds, has rekindled his career in the last two years with Everton.

He said: "You never say no to your country if it comes calling. What I have benefited from in my brief time with Everton is that I have not been away with the squad and have been able to rest. That enables you to prolong your career."

Martyn went into decline at Leeds and he ended up with his international career in tatters as he was playing in the reserves, curiously behind the emerging Robinson.

"It (retirement) was forced on me. It would have been a brave England manager to select me when I couldn't get in at Leeds," he said. "I am fortunate to get another chance to play again and I am enjoying every minute of it. I am training hard and trying to keep as fit as I can. I need to take any chances that come my way with both hands and be really selfish."
