Wengers backs Senderos as 'immense player'Arsene Wenger admitted he had to remove Philippe Senderos from the Arsenal firing line after his loss of confidence, but backed him to recover and become an 'immense player'.
Senderos, 20, hardly put a foot wrong in the second half of last season when he replaced the injured Sol Campbell, keeping 12 clean sheets in 14 Premiership and FA Cup appearances from March until the end of the campaign.
However, he was muscled out of the Community Shield by Didier Drogba, who scored twice in that game, before returning to haunt him at Stamford Bridge last weekend, when he struck Chelsea's winner.
Wenger duly dropped Senderos from the starting line-up for last night's 4-1 win against Fulham, when replacement Pascal Cygan scored twice.
Wenger revealed: 'I wanted to rest Philippe. Sometimes when you are young like him, if you get out of the team to reflect, recover and then come back, you are always stronger.
'If you are under pressure at 20 and everyone analyses every ball you face, sometimes you can go downhill. It's better that you move out and come back again when you are regenerated.
'I didn't take him out because he made a mistake on Sunday. He's such a winner but does not have the experience to go with his intense desire to win. When he makes a mistake, he became weak after that.
'That shows you that he needs a little breather. But I rate him very highly. I think he will be an immense player for the club and I'm completely convinced of that.
'I don't ask him to understand that as he wants to play every game. That's normal. But I feel it's good sometimes to have two or three games, a little distance from the pressure, before coming back stronger.'
With Arsenal not playing this weekend, Senderos will go away for international duty with Switzerland before returning ahead of Arsenal's next game at Middlesbrough on September 10.
Wenger must then judge whether to keep Cygan in the side, while Campbell, who is still gaining sharpness after a calf injury, should also be closer to a first-team comeback.
Senderos, however, was certainly not expecting to be dropped, having observed in an interview with the club's official programme for last night's game that he would learn from his problems against Chelsea.
'I should have positioned myself a lot better . Maybe it was lucky the way that it bounced, but I should have done better. I should have been on Drogba's other side,' he said.
However, he insisted: 'I prefer to keep my head down. I concentrate on what I have to do and I know better than anyone else does what I have to do to improve my game.
'As a footballer, you have to be prepared to take the criticism, it's part of the job.'
