SHEPHERD HINTS AT FUTURE WOODY MOVEFREDDY SHEPHERD has hinted that Jonathan Woodgate could make a sensational return to Newcastle. The United chairman has revealed he has been in touch with the England centre-back this week - and told him his No 6 shirt is still available.
The news comes as Southampton stopper Claus Lundekvam confirmed an approach from the Magpies before transfer deadline day.
That suggests the hierarchy at St James's is well aware that United need to strengthen their defensive options.
The closure of last night's summer transfer window means any deal for a new defender will not happen until January at the earliest . . .
But Real Madrid's purchase of defender Sergio Ramos from Sevilla for a massive 18.4 million will prompt suggestions that Woodgate's long-term future is far from secure in the Spanish capital.
The former Leeds star has yet to make a competitive debut after leaving United for the Spanish club a year ago in a 13 million deal.
But Woodgate was in the Real squad for their first game of the season last week, and insists he is finally over his long-term thigh problem.
A future short-term contract from the Magpies, or pay-as-you-play deal, cannot be ruled - and could even happen as early as the New Year if the club's defensive problems continue, and Woodgate proves his fitness.
Asked yesterday if a return for the player was imminent, Shepherd said: "No. He just keeps in touch with the lads.
"But he watched Owen's unveiling on telly and thought it was fantastic.
"He still has the club at heart and I told him the No 6 shirt is still on the hook."
Meanwhile, Lundekvam has confirmed his disappointment after Southamptom priced him out of a move to Tyneside.
"I was very disappointed there and then but I have calmed down now," he said.
"The transfer was quickly and brutally stopped. Southampton wanted £1.5 million for me. That's far too much for a 32-year-old and Newcastle were going to use their cash on someone else.
"It would have been really interesting. They are a big club.
"There might still be something happening in January but I'm not thinking about that. I've always said I want to play at the highest level and with a transfer to Newcastle, I feel I might have got a lift and a new challenge."
