Atkinson's first podium finish!
In what is supposed to be a learning season for him in the World Rally Championship, Chris Atkinson achieved a remarkable performance in Japan, a result that is above his team's expectations. The Australian driver finished on the podium for the first time of his young career.
This excellent result is partly due to his past experience in this rally. Unlike the other rounds of the Championship, Atkinson had the opportunity to compete in Japan prior to this year.
eah definitely I think it helped a lot,?/FONT> admitted the Subaru driver. ll year we have been doing new events all the time. It's very hard to come straight into the world championship and not make mistakes when you are trying to push, so it's good to come to an event we have done before. I think that showed. Experience helps a lot and we are really happy with the result of that and looking forward to the future.?/FONT>
The next two rounds of the championship ?Corsica and Catalunya ?will be two more steps into the unknown for Atkinson. Moreover, the two events are asphalt rallies, which is not the favourite surface of the young Australian.
Fortunately, after these two races, Chris will be back home in Australia for the season finale of the 2005 championship, a race that should give in the opportunity to shine once again.
bviously we needed a result and even though we had shown a bit of potential we didn't have the result that we wanted and it's good to have that finally come through. Hopefully the future is looking good and obviously you have a lot more confidence when you are going into each event and you don't have to worry. When you are confident to drive that is when you drive at your best,?/FONT> mentioned the Subaru driver.
His co-driver - Glenn MacNeall - doesn't think that they took a different approach in Japan: t's exactly what Chris said. The difference here is the experience. He has been driving exactly the same as he has been doing in other rallies but the thing is he has experience of the stages here. If you have something to go on from past years, that makes the difference. These guys are the best in the world going very, very quickly and to match them you do need all the experience you can get.?/FONT>
Experience is the key; after familiarising himself with the rallies of the World Rally Championship this year, Atkinson will be even stronger in 2006: he speed Chris has shown has been exceptional,?/FONT> said MacNeall. e makes exceptionally good notes and commits to them very, very well from the first pass. He is exceptionally good in the fast stuff. He is exceptionally good everywhere really. He just needs the experience. At his level he needs the experience and that is what he has been trying to do this year.?/FONT>
