The Netherlands' 2-0 victory against the Czech Republic on Saturday secured not only their own qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ but also that of Croatia, England and Poland, while Italy and Portugal also booked their finals places.
Goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Barry Opdam gave the Oranje a first-ever victory in Prague, which was celebrated elsewhere in Europe.
England's single-goal victory over Austria means that Sven-Goran Eriksson's men will at least qualify as one of the two best runners-up, as will Poland, who currently top Group 6.
Croatia's 1-0 win over Sweden means that they too will be travelling to Germany, either as group winners or at least as one of the best runners-up.
Italy confirmed their place in Germany with a 1-0 home win over Slovenia that means they cannot be caught at the top of Group 5, while Portugal clinched first place in Group 3 after an unexpectedly tight 2-1 home victory over Liechtenstein.
