“ <long pause> Did we get third Dad ?”
“ No Son, but we did come fourth, higher than Liverpool!”
“ WOW , and I bet Liverpool never won nothing that year did they Dad?”
“ Well <cough> they did win the European Cup in the greatest final the competition's ever seen”
“ <pause> Oh, but I’ll bet we scored more goals than them didn’t we Dad?”
“ <cough> No Son we scored 45 and they scored 52”
“ Oh - but I bet our goal difference was miles better wasn’t it Dad?”
“ <cough> erm no Son, ours was minus one and theirs was plus eleven”
“ <pause> Oh, well did we ever play in Europe as well Dad?”
“ Oh yes Son - we got fourth place so we qualified for the Champs League!”
“ WOW - who did we get in our group Dad, Real Madrid or AC Milan?”
“ Well no son , we played Villareal”
“ <pause> Who are they Dad?”
“ They’re from Spain son”
“ Oh, right - so who did we play next Dad?”
“ <cough> Erm, we didn’t son - they knocked us out before the groups, but we were dead unlucky, big Dunc had a goal disallowed!”
“ WOW, so they only beat us 1-0 Dad ?”
“ Erm, no Son 4-2, but that meant we went in the UEFA cup!”
“ WOW - who did we play Dad?”
“ Dynamo Buchearest Son, and we beat them 1-0 at Goodison - great game!”
“WOW must have been great that Dad . I bet Goodison was packed , how many were there Dad?”
“ 21,843 Son”
“ Oh, <pause> well who did we play in the next round Dad?”
“ We didn’t Son, Dynamo knocked us out, they beat us in the first leg “
“ What score Dad”
“<cough>, <cough> errmm 5-1 son”
“ <pause> Oh, but I bet after that we were top of the prem weren’t we Dad?”
“ <cough> No Son”
“<pause> Oh, were we near the top then Dad?”
