Brazil named team of year by FIFA
ZURICH, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Brazil were named team of the year by soccer's governing body FIFA at its annual gala on Monday after the world champions finished 44 points clear of their nearest rivals in the rankings.The Confederations Cup champions accrued 840 points in 2005, having started the year as world number one and recorded 10 wins, four draws and two defeats.
The Czech Republic were second, improving on their ranking in 2004 by two places, FIFA said in a statement.

Ghana won the race for the best mover title, beating Ethiopia and Togo.
In an eventful year, the African side qualified for the World Cup finals, to be held in Germany from June 9, for the first time.
Ghana are ranked 50 among the world's teams at the end of year, up from 77th at the end of 2004.
FIFA said 743 matches were contested during 2005, with almost half played as part of preparations for next year's World Cup.

MADRID (AFP) - Cicinho, who has made his name on the right wing for his club Sao Paulo and Brazil, has signed a five year contract with Real Madrid.
The 25-year-old, who also has Italian nationality, will join the seven time European champions next week.
Real's official website, announcing the deal on Friday, confirmed: "The player, one of the major hopes of Brazilian football, will be integrated with the team after the Christmas break at the next training session on December 29."

Real said back in August that they had reached an agreement with Sao Paulo over Cicinho.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid also announced on Friday that former player Benito Floro would replace Arrigo Sacchi as sporting director on a contract until 2008.

Malaga sign Brazilian defender Gabriel
Malaga sign Brazilian defender GabrielMADRID, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Malaga have signed Brazilian defender Gabriel Rodrigues dos Santos on a three and a half-year deal from Fluminense, the Primera Liga side said on Friday.
The club said that the 24-year-old, who has won one cap for Brazil, would begin training with his new team mates on Jan. 3. They did not reveal the cost of the transfer.
Gabriel, who can also play in midfield, joined Fluminense from Sao Paulo in January 2005.
He will team up with fellow Brazilian Bovio who is also coming to Malaga in the New Year after joining the club as a free agent from Santos.
Malaga are in 15th place in the 20-strong Primera Liga, two points above the relegation zone.

With only a lone cap to date, right-back Gabriel hasn’t ruled out the possibility of grabbing a place at the 2006 World Cup. The player feels that with his move to Malaga, and Cicinho’s arrival at Real Madrid, could nudge him into pole position.
In Gabriel’s opinion, Cicinho, almost weighed down by the label of being Cafú’s ‘natural heir’, is going to enjoy precious few minutes playing for the Merengues. “He won’t get to play much there, and that could work in my favour”.

Elber signs to play for Cruzeiro from January
BERLIN, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Former Brazilian international Giovane Elber will return to club football in his home country for the first time in 14 years having signed a contract with Cruzeiro, German newspaper Bild said on Wednesday.Elber, who has played most of his career in Germany, has agreed an initial one-year deal with the first division side from Belo Horizonte starting on Jan. 2.
"It will be a big challenge for me to secure titles for Cruzeiro as I have in Europe and particularly in Germany," Bild's website quoted Elber as saying. Cruzeiro were Brazilian champions in 2003.

Elber agreed to terminate his contract with Borussia Moenchengladbach earlier this month after being slapped with a 10,000 euro ($11,920) fine for accusing the German club's coach of not telling the truth about his omission from the side.
The short and sparky striker, formerly of Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart, is the highest scoring foreign player in the history of the Bundesliga with 133 goals.
The highlight of the 33-year-old's career was his seven-year spell at Bayern, where he won four German league titles and the European Cup in 2001.
Elber joined Gladbach from Olympique Lyon on a free transfer in January 2005, but has been dogged by injuries.
He has made just four substitute appearances in the Bundesliga this season and not scored. His contract had originally run until the end of the season.

"In Brazil people are too concerned with the week-to-week results," the 52-year-old former Brazil midfielder told Globo TV. "I wouldn't even think about working at Flamengo. "After the World Cup my time with Japan ends and if I continue coaching, which I probably will, I see my future in Europe."
