2001 World Rally Champion passes away
Richard Burns
Former World Rally Champion Richard Burns has died after failing to recover from a brain tumour. He was 34.
The only Englishman to win the prestigious driving title, in 2001, he underwent brain surgery to remove a tumour in April, but died on Friday with his close family and friends at his bedside.
His last race was in 2003 while leading the world championship. He was forced to stop racing after fainting at the wheel of his car while travelling to the Wales Rally GB.
"From the outset Richard knew that the odds were heavily against him and yet he fought his illness with bravery and good humour," the statement said.
"Having undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy he was able to leave hospital in summer 2004. For a while his health showed signs of improvement but then after six months it once again began to decline.
"Determined not to give up, he opted for surgery earlier this year. This alleviated some of the symptoms of his illness and enabled him to remain active. At Castle Combe in August he attended a parade of the rally cars that he drove throughout his career and was touched by the warmth of the reception he received.
"However there was to be no miracle and in recent days he lapsed into a coma. The date of a memorial service will be announced shortly."
The Reading-born driver made his breakthrough when he became the youngest-ever winner of the British rally championship in 1993 when he was with Subaru.
He then competed in the Asia-Pacific Championships before entering the world championship on a full-time basis for the first time in 1998 partnering Finland's Tommi Makinen for Mitsubishi.
He moved back to Subaru the following year and after racking up wins in Greece, Australia and Britain, he placed second in the world championship standings.
He had to settle for second again the following year, but he finally grabbed the supreme title in his sport in 2001 when he beat off a strong challenge from arch-rival Colin McRae of Scotland to clinch a thrilling victory by finishing third in the closing Rally of Great Britain.
Burns switched again after his world title, moving to Peugeot, but failed to win a race all season in 2002 although he still managed to finish overall second.
In all he raced in 105 world championship rallies, winning 10.

Subaru World Rally Team Saddened by Richard Burns Losing his Battle with Illness
The Subaru World Rally Team was deeply saddened to learn of the death of one of its greatest drivers, Richard Burns, after a long fight with cancer.
Richard was a long-time friend of Subaru, having enjoyed two spells with the team in his distinguished rallying career. Driving a Subaru Impreza, Richard became the first-ever Englishman to win the FIA World Rally Championship drivers' title in 2001 and scored eight of his ten WRC wins with the team.
Richard first joined Subaru in 1992 to contest the British Rally Championship and became the youngest-ever winner of the series the following year. After a short time away from the team Richard rejoined Subaru in 1999 and was twice runner-up in the Drivers' championship before securing the title in 2001.
Subaru World Rally Team Technical Director David Lapworth said, "At this sad time our thoughts are with Richard's partner Zoe and his family and friends. Richard was one of the key people who brought the Subaru World Rally Team to what it is today and a large part of our success comes from his input. His wins in the British Championship in 1993 and the World Championship in 2001 brought Subaru to the pinnacle of rallying and his loss leaves a huge gap. Richard will be sorely missed by all at the Subaru World Rally Team, the WRC community and rallying fans across the world."

BBC Radio Five Live motor racing correspondent Maurice Hamilton pays tribute to former World Rally Champion Richard Burns.
I first met Richard when he became the British Championship's youngest winner in 1993.
You always earmark anyone who wins the British Championship, you have a look at him and see how he is doing.
Unfortunately drivers who win the British Championship rarely make it to the World Rally Championship because you either need money or talent.
But Richard made that step and was quick so you thought "that guy is worth watching" because so few get that far so clearly there was something about him.
Richard was the complete counterpoint to Colin McRae.
That is meant as no disrespect to Colin, they were just two different guys.
Colin is the extrovert whereas Richard thought everything through.
He was a quiet bloke and hugely talented because you don't win 10 world championship rallies or become world champion which he did in 2001 if you are no good.
He was a class act and a very nice guy to know.
He just got on with the job, he applied a lot of thought to every aspect of his driving.
Most of his success was with Subaru and he got on well with them, he was at home there, because he liked to be in the middle of everything.
Winning the championship with them in 2001, the first Englishman to do so, was a tough fight.
We have only had Colin winning the world title so as Brits we don't have that sort of success so to actually come through and be runner-up twice and then win it is a mark of his talent.
Richard's partnership with co-driver Robert Reid was very special.
Because Richard was so particular about how things should be done, Robert was one of the few people who understood what he needed.
They worked together for the first time in 1991 and the partnership was unbroken.
Although he won't be regarded as one of the true greats, he certainly is a great because of the things that he achieved.
If the car was competitive Richard was definitely in with a shout of winning it again.
After his disappointing time with Peugeot he was going back to his roots and he would have been pushing.
He was a modest man and will be remembered very fondly, he was an absolute natural.
Richard .. :icon074: Former world champion Burns dies
Richard Burns, who won the World Rally Championship in 2001, has died at the age of 34 after a long illness, on the fourth anniversary of his title win.
Burns had not competed since he passed out at the wheel of his road car on the way to the Wales Rally GB in 2003.
He was diagnosed with a brain tumour and underwent surgery in April.
Burns was championship runner-up in 1999 and 2000 before becoming the first Englishman to land the coveted world title 12 months later.
Burns' family paid tribute to him in a statement, saying: "From the outset Richard knew that the odds were heavily against him and yet he fought his illness with bravery and good humour.
"Having undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy he was able to leave hospital in summer 2004.
"For a while his health showed signs of improvement but then after six months it once again began to decline.
"Determined not to give up, he opted for surgery earlier this year. This alleviated some of the symptoms of his illness and enabled him to remain active.

"The date of a memorial service will be announced shortly."
Burns made his rallying breakthrough in 1990 when he won the national 205GTI challenge series and he then lifted the Mintex National series title.
He then joined Subaru and became the British Championship's youngest winner in 1993.
After a spell in the Asia Pacific Championship and the occasional world championship drive, he entered for his first full season in 1998, partnering world champion Tommi Makinen for Mitsubishi.
Twelve months later he moved to Subaru and he made his first title challenge as wins in Greece, Australia and Britain helped him finish second in the final standings.
In 2000 he looked on course to win the world title, having led the championship race for some time, but he was pipped to glory by Marcus Gronholm - even though he won the season-ending Rally of Great Britain.
However he was not to be denied and in 2001 he became the first Englishman to take the championship.
After a poor start to the season, he finished second behind Colin McRae in Argentina to spark his challenge. Two more runners-up spots followed before he earned his first victory of the campaign in New Zealand.
Another second spot - this time in Australia - set up a thrilling finale at the Rally of Great Britain where Burns delighted his home fans by finishing third, which was enough to clinch the title.
He switched teams in the close-season, leaving Subaru for Peugeot but did not manage to win an event all season despite claiming four second-place finishes as he came fifth in the championship standings.
Burns made a good start to his 2003 campaign and he led the field by six points after three events and held a four-point lead in the middle of the season.
He lost his lead with two events to go and was taken ill on his way to the season-ending Rally GB. Sunday, 25 November, 2001, 13:58 GMT
