No pens in Inter's favour this term
Along with Ascoli, Parma and Treviso, the Nerazzurri are one of four Serie A teams without a penalty kick given in their favour this season. Inter's last penalty was awarded in the 2-0 home win against Siena on 1 May 2005, with Julio Cruz scoring from the spot. Eighteen league matches have been played since then (last 4 of last season + first 14 of current campaign).

Milan's holey defence
The Rossoneri rearguard used to be one of AC Milan's strengths, but according to the statistics this is no longer the case. In 14 Serie A 2005/06 matches AC Milan have let in at least one goal a game, and have conceded 10 in their last 7 league fixtures. The last Rossoneri clean sheet was on 16 October when they beat Cagliari 2-0 at the Sant'Elia.

Rossoneri on target for 17 consecutive league games
AC Milan have scored at least one goal in each of their last 17 Serie A matches (total 36 goals). The last time the Rossoneri failed to score in the league was on 8 May 2005 when they lost 1-0 at home to Juventus.

Inter prolific with subs, 11 Milan players on target
Of Inter's 24 Serie A goals in 2005/06, 7 have been scored by substitutes: Cruz (4), Adriano (2) and Cambiasso (1). No other team has scored as many goals with subs this season. Milan, meanwhile, have scored with 11 different players in the first 14 league matches: Gilardino, Shevchenko, Kakà, Maldini, Ambrosini, Gattuso, Inzaghi, Kaladze, Pirlo, Seedorf, Vieri. Lazio have also scored with the same number of different players, while 10 Nerazzurri have hit the target in the Serie A so far this term: Cruz, Adriano, Cambiasso, Cordoba, Martins, Figo, Materazzi, Recoba, Samuel and Stankovic.

MANCINI: "AS ALWAYS, DECISIONS TOMORROW"
Saturday, 10 December 2005 15:54:18
APPIANO GENTILE - Part three of Roberto Mancini's pre-Inter v AC Milan news conference:

Mancini, are you thinking of playing Adriano alone up front or have you decided to play another striker alongside the Brazilian?
"I have already thought about it, but I will decide tomorrow. We have three strikers available and there's not much choice. Unfortunately Alvaro Recoba, who was in great form, has had some physical problems, like Marco Materazzi. We have had a few small problems but we must try to play well all the same."

How are you thinking of replacing Marco Materazzi?
"We will miss Marco because he is an important player for us. His injury has created a few small problems for us. It would have been better to have him available, but the same goes for Recoba who was having an excellent moment of form. But unfortunately injuries exist and this is one of the reasons why Inter has a big squad."

Are you thinking of using Luis Figo behind the two strikers again?
"Figo is already prone to moving central when he plays on the right to look for more spaces, so sometimes he naturally moves into a position behind the two strikers. It was a bit more difficult for him against Parma in the championship because they defended with two players in the middle, so there were fewer spaces."

Are you still angry about the Ascoli match?
(Mancini smiles) "But it didn't last a whole week... More than angry, I was disappointed because we created so many chances and wasted a lot. But the following day it had all passed."

MANCINI: "NO FEAR"
Saturday, 10 December 2005 15:19:22
APPIANO GENTILE - Ahead of tomorrow's Serie A Week 15 fixture between Inter and AC Milan - the 263rd derby, Roberto Mancini answered questions from journalists at the pre-match news conference:

Mancini, yesterday Massimo Moratti said that the derby is obviously a match that must be won. What do you have to do to win three points tomorrow?
"Tomorrow we have to win as always; it's not as if we absolutely have to win tomorrow and that the following Sunday is not important. To reach the top of the table we always have to try and win three points. It is important to play a very careful match and face it with great tranquillity."

Each derby has its own particular feel, but in tomorrow's one you could also overtake Milan in the table. Is this its particular feel?
"It is important to win so we don't lose more ground on Juventus. Before trying to reach them it is obviously important to overtake who is in front of us."

Would the team that loses the derby be out of the Scudetto race?
"No, I don't think so. There are still too many matches to play. Also, I think that sooner or later Juventus will slow up, even if they are a great team that are doing very well. But the moment will come when Juventus drop a few points in matches that seem easy, because this is football."

But would a draw be good for Juventus?
"But Juventus could also lose against Cagliari, you must never take anything for granted. We are just thinking about ourselves and we will try to win."

Do you fear Christian Vieri's desire to return to form?
"Vieri is one of Milan's many champions. If he plays we will have to be careful of him just like all the others."

But would you be more frightened of Gilardino alongside Shevchenko or a highly motivated Vieri against his ex-team?
"We mustn't be frightened of anyone, and I say this with much sincerity because we are talking about a football match. The worst thing that can happen would be a defeat. But when I play against any team, not just the derby, I think I have the best squad available so I'm not that worried. But we will have to be very careful because we face a Milan side with great champions."

MANCINI: "AN EVENLY-BALANCED MATCH"
Saturday, 10 December 2005 15:39:47
APPIANO GENTILE - Part two of Roberto Mancini's pre-Inter v AC Milan news conference:

Mancini, in recent derbies Milan have been favourites, but now they're saying that Inter are. What do you think?
"I think that Milan are still favourites. And I say this for a logical reason: they are two points in front of us so they are slightly favoured. But as often happens in derbies these things don't count because they are always unique matches."

What has stopped Inter from winning in recent derbies?
"Neither team was superior to the other in last year's derbies. They were all very balanced matches decided by a episode or a goal that came out of nothing, like the goal in the 45th minute of the first half in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, or the own goal let in in the second championship match. We played four very balanced derbies and either side could have won them."

How have Inter and Milan changed compared to recent derbies?
"Inter have definitely improved. Milan were already strong last season and they are still a great team even if they haven't had positive results in the championship lately. Both teams have improved and there's no big difference between the two squads, so these are always very tight matches."

Have you thought of anything in particular to stop Kakà?
"It's a football match between two of the best teams in the world. I think Milan should also be a bit worried about us. This is why I say there's no big difference between the two teams. And it's obvious that both Inter and Milan have many great champions capable of deciding the match. We will clearly have to keep an eye on these players, but the same goes for any team with great champions. You might pay less attention to this in other matches because there's a bigger technical gap between the players. Inter and Milan balance each other out, and this is why there were episodes in last year's matches. Milan never dominated us."

Maldini misses Milan derby Saturday 10 December, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paolo Maldini and Marcos Cafu have been ruled out of Sunday’s San Siro showdown by injury, but Christian Vieri is in the Milan squad.

There were doubts over the Rossoneri captain after he limped off during the 2-1 defeat at Chievo last weekend.

Maldini is suffering from a left thigh problem, while Brazilian international Cafu has been sidelined for several weeks. Both veterans will be in the stands for the Sunday night clash with local rivals Inter.

“We have a few injury worries in defence, but apart from that our morale is high and we really want to play this derby,” said Coach Carlo Ancelotti.

This will force major changes to the Milan back four, where Jaap Stam is expected to move into central defence and former Inter man Dario Simic slots in at right-back. Serginho should maintain his place on the left.

There were doubts over whether Vieri, who made a shock move across the city in the summer, would be a part of this game, but he is in the squad.

Milan squad: Dida, Kalac; Kaladze, Marzoratti, Nesta, Jankulovski, Simic, Stam; Gattuso, Kaka', Pirlo, Rui Costa, Seedorf, Serginho, Vogel; Gilardino, Inzaghi, Shevchenko, Vieri

Ancelotti feels derby pressure Sunday 11 December, 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carlo Ancelotti realises that failure to win the derby will wreck the Scudetto hopes of Milan or Inter, so there is tremendous psychological pressure on both sides.

“We cannot afford to make calculations on various results. A setback would make closing the gap on Juventus even more difficult, so this is a game that puts a great deal of psychological pressure on both teams,” warned the Rossoneri boss.

Juve are already eight points clear at the top of the table and could further extend that advantage this weekend, as they face a relatively simple home task against Cagliari.

Ancelotti’s men have been stuttering in Serie A of late and their 2-1 defeat at Chievo last week has placed Inter as the favourites for the first time in several seasons.

Both outfits have injury worries, as Paolo Maldini, Marcos Cafu, Alvaro Recoba and Marco Materazzi are sidelined, but former Inter star Christian Vieri could make his mark on his old club.

“I have a few doubts on how to replace Maldini. As for Vieri, he will take centre stage for Milan before the end of the season and I hope he can begin on Sunday night.”

The Nerazzurri haven’t won a derby match since March 2002, when Vieri was on the scoresheet, but Ancelotti is not sticking by superstition.

“This is more or less the same Inter side we faced last season in Serie A and the Champions League. They are a solid team with a good defensive set-up and Adriano is finding his form again. We must try to give them the same problems we’ve created for these players over the last couple of years.”

Kaka caused controversy this week by suggesting that Ancelotti would’ve either resigned or been fired had they not qualified for the second round of the Champions League.

“We were at a crossroads against Schalke and took the right path,” assured the Coach. “My warm celebrations with Vice-President Adriano Galliani were down to our relief at qualifying, not in any way reflecting some imaginary difficulty I’m having in finishing the season. If there was some misunderstanding with the players about that, it’s purely because they’ve read too many newspapers. My rapport with the club is solid.”
