Prem duo fight for SuttonPortsmouth and Everton will fight it out for signature of Celtic star Chris Sutton during the January transfer window.
Toffees manager David Moyes became interested in Sutton when he learned the striker was available for as little as £300,000 due to a release clause.
The news quickly pricked the ears of Harry Redknapp and with the reported investment of Alexandre Gaydamak, Portsmouth will be better placed to meet Sutton's contract demands.
The Englishman is thought to want a deal up to 2008 but the Everton board have been consistently reluctant to offer lengthy contracts to players over 30.
Sutton is 32 and his increasing vulnerability to injury is not helping Moyes convince the club to offer £25,000 a week for two-and-a-half years.
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has not given up hope of keeping Sutton but knows the player can leave for free in June.

Celtic striker Chris Sutton is set to seal a move to Birmingham, according to newspaper reports.
BBC Scotland revealed on Wednesday that he was exercising his right to talk to other clubs, with Blues being one of the interested Premiership parties.
The 32-year-old's contract at Parkhead expires in the summer and, at best, Celtic are only likely to receive a nominal fee.
Sutton arrived in Scotland in a £6m switch from Chelsea in 2000.
His agent Tony McGill confirmed on Wednesday that Sutton was in talks with other clubs.
However, he stressed: "Anyone hoping to do business before the end of the season would have to speak to Celtic and to my knowledge, that hasn't happened."
Earlier McGill had described the interested clubs as a "mixture of top clubs, middle-ranking clubs and others".
And he added: "I really don't know what will happen at the moment, there has nothing been decided either way.
"Chris could sign a pre-contract at one club and play out the rest of his contract at Celtic.
"That's within Fifa rules and we haven't ruled out that possibility but you never know what can happen. Things change so quickly in football."
Sutton has been hampered by injury this season and has failed to hold down a regular starting place.
