Joey Barton走人?
Barton hands in transfer requestManchester City midfielder Joey Barton has stunned the club by handing in a transfer request.
City opened contract talks with the 23-year-old midfielder last week and manager Stuart Pearce insists he is determined to hang on to him.
The club quickly rejected the request, saying they wanted to continue talks.
"The manager has publicly stated his desire to keep the player at Manchester City," said a statement on the club's official website.
"A second round of negotiations between the club and the player's representatives took place on Monday and Manchester City wishes to continue those talks."
Barton's agent Willie McKay claimed on Monday night that he had not been made aware of the developments.
The midfielder only has until the end of 31 January to secure a deal before the transfer window closes.
Barton has come through some troubled times to produce some impressive displays for City this season.
In December 2004, he pushed a lit cigar into the eye of young team-mate Jamie Tandy during club's Christmas party and was fined six weeks' wages by City.
The player was sent home from a pre-season tour of Thailand in July 2005 after being involved in an altercation with a 15-year-old Everton fan in Bangkok.
Pearce stood by Barton after the Thailand incident, and he has responded with some impressive displays which led some to suggest that he might win an England call-up.
After the Thailand incident Barton stressed that he was determined to "make things up" to Pearce.
It is understood he was offered a new contract worth double his current deal - but he has turned it down.
Barton has attracted interest from several Premiership clubs, including Birmingham, Charlton and Middlesbrough.
In December, he played on despite learning that his brother Michael had been found guilty of the racist killing of Anthony Walker and must serve 18 years in prison.

Man City reject Barton transfer request
Manchester City have rejected Joey Barton's shock transfer request and wrapped up the £6million signing of Georgios Samaras from Heerenveen.City opened contract talks with Barton only last week and manager Stuart Pearce has clearly not given up hope of persuading him to stay at Eastlands.
A club statement read: 'The manager has publicly stated his desire to keep the player at Manchester City Football Club.
'A second round of negotiations between the club and the player's representatives took place today and Manchester City wishes to continue those talks.'
It is understood that Barton has been offered a new contract worth double his current deal but turned it down and handed in his transfer request.
Barton's agent Willie McKay claimed on Monday night that he had not been made aware of the developments.
Pearce stood by 23-year-old Barton in July of last year when he was sent home from a pre-season tour of Thailand in disgrace after being involved in an altercation with a 15-year-old Everton fan at City's team hotel in Bangkok.
Barton was given another chance and responded with some impressive displays this season which led some to suggest that he might be handed an England call-up.
Barton has attracted interest from several Premiership clubs - thought to include Arsenal, Birmingham, Charlton and Middlesbrough - and it remains to be seen if a move away from Eastlands unfolds before the January transfer window closes at midnight on Tuesday.
The Thailand incident was not the first controversial moment in Barton's career.
In December 2004 he stabbed a lit cigar into the eye of young team-mate Jamie Tandy during club's Christmas party and was fined six weeks' wages by City.
After the Thailand incident Barton stressed that he was determined to 'make things up' to Pearce.
Barton's form suggested he was determined to make the most of City's backing and last month he played on despite learning that his brother Michael had been found guilty of the racist killing of Anthony Walker and must serve 18 years in prison.
Meanwhile City clinched a deal for Samaras and the 20-year-old Greek striker will make his City debut in Wednesday's home Premiership clash with Newcastle providing his international clearance comes through in time.
City, who had previously offered only £3million for Samaras, agreed a £6million fee with Heerenveen on Saturday night.
Samaras has since passed a medical and agreed personal terms and is believed to have signed a four-and-a-half year deal.
Samaras will be unveiled during a press conference at City's Carrington training ground on Tuesday morning ahead of the Newcastle clash.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted he is an admirer of Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton's talents.
The Gunners boss does not want to get involved in any great debate about the City man with Stuart Pearce incredibly frustrated with the player's decision to slap in a transfer request on Monday.
The Eastlands outfit have been in talks over a new contract but Barton is unhappy with the terms on offer and demanded a move.
City immediately rejected the request but there has been speculation that a shock move could be tied up in the hours that remain before the transfer deadline passes.
Arsenal are one of the clubs being forwarded as an option in some quarters as Wenger looks for a long-term replacement for Patrick Vieira.
"I like Joey Barton," Wenger told Sky Sports News.
"But, you know, I don't want to interfere with that publicly.
"He has been negotiating with his own club so I do not want to interfere with that." 原帖由 PaulWeller 於 2006-2-112:42 AM 發表

"Pearce will let Barton face the fans' fury"
By Andy Hunter
Joey Barton made a sensible decision as he drove into Manchester City's Carrington training ground at 9.35am yesterday morning. No, really. The 23-year-old isolated himself from the vitriol that has greeted arguably the most selfish act of the Premiership season by wearing Ipod earpieces and listening to the car stereo at the same time, although the confused wall of sound offered no protection for a confrontation that followed shortly afterwards with Stuart Pearce.
If the midfielder was unaware of the reaction to his decision on Monday night to reject a £28,000-a-week contract offer from City and submit an instant transfer request, then he will have had an indication of the anger that has been expressed by supporters from the face of his manager. Pearce was waiting for Barton when the player he saved from the sack last summer reported for duty, and it was fortunate for him that the manager's press conference for tonight's game against Newcastle took place before he arrived.
Earlier, the City manager had expressed dismay at the midfielder's actions and, in keeping with the club's response to decline both the request and an undisclosed offer from Middlesbrough, vowed to continue efforts to encourage Barton to sign a new deal before the end of this season or, should he resist, keep the Liverpudlian at the club for the remainder of his existing contract. "Joey came for nothing and can go for nothing at the end of his contract. If I decided it was the best for Manchester City, I'd make him see out his contract," insisted Pearce. Yet while he toed a diplomatic line and could dwell on the future as he unveiled new £6m Greek striker Giorgios Samaras, Pearce could not disguise the sense of betrayal he feels over Barton's ungracious stance.
The former England defender has been instrumental in the midfielder's rehabilitation this season, both on and off a football field and the player has responded with his most mature season to date. It was at Pearce's instigation that City opened contract talks last week but having been repaid with a kick in the teeth the manager's indulgence is now at an end. "The best for Manchester City," is a phrase Pearce used regularly yesterday, and had an offer in excess of £4m arrived before last night's transfer deadline Barton would have been sold. Unless there is a U-turn before the end of the season, and neither side is currently prepared to concede ground, then Pearce will lose his finest young talent for a second successive summer.
The City manager, who was thwarted in his attempts to bring Shaun Wright-Phillips back to the club on loan from a reluctant Chelsea, admitted: "I'm from a family background which demands that if you show me loyalty, I'll show you loyalty. That's why I stayed at Nottingham Forest for 12 years. I'm disappointed, but I'm more disappointed for the fans and for the board who stood by Joey prior to me becoming manager. I think he's backed himself into a bit of a corner here in respect to what he's said. For me, we are in the middle of contract negotiations with him and I'm still hopeful he'll extend his stay here and remain part of what we are trying to achieve. We'll do everything we can to keep him here."
The player is understood to want parity with the club's highest earner, David James, in his new contract and has also questioned whether Manchester City is the best place to advance his England claims for this summer's World Cup. Despite the controversy, Pearce intends to select Barton against Newcastle tonight when he will want his Ipod more than ever. "He will just have to cope with any backlash," said the manager, "I'm sure Joey and his advisor will have thought of that before he made his statement. Maybe they felt it might have alerted some of the top clubs in Europe to come in and get him."
