Wenger admits to Campbell worriesArsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he is concerned for Sol Campbell's wellbeing - and said he does not know when he will next see the player.
Campbell left Highbury before the end of Wednesday's 3-2 defeat to West Ham after he was substituted at half-time.
Now Wenger has said: "At the moment I am worried about Sol because he is down. The reason? Only he can answer."
Team-mate Robert Pires said earlier on Friday that 31-year-old Campbell had a "big worry" in his private life.
Campbell was taken off after a torrid first-half display in the defeat to West Ham.
Wenger then gave the centre-back time off training and revealed he would not feature against Birmingham on Saturday.
Wenger, speaking to the London Evening Standard newspaper, added: "He was disappointed by his performance on Wednesday. I had not seen any special problem affecting him.
"There is no bad feeling between us. Does he have a future at Arsenal? Of course. I don't know when I will see him - next week, certainly, but I do not know when.
"I will talk with him but at the moment I am more focused on the game at Birmingham.
"I hope that when he comes back he comes back stronger. It is down to the individual. There is no reason he cannot be the same player."
Campbell's representative Sky Andrew told BBC Sport he would be making no comment to the media about the Arsenal star's situation at the moment.
Pires, speaking to a French radio station, said: "He certainly has a big worry on the private side and that is what is upsetting him."
But while Wenger did not seem to know where Campbell was, Pires said he and other players had spoken to the England man.
"We want to tell him and make him understand that we are behind him whatever happens. We all have difficult times in our careers.
"It is hard for him to face up to the situation, but he is not alone. He knows that and we have told him so this morning."
Another player, Kolo Toure, who is away at the African Cup of Nations, said he had tried and failed to contact Campbell.
"I think Sol Campbell is a good player. We all know what he has done for Arsenal and the England national team as well.
"That kind of thing (the West Ham performance) can happen once in your life. For me he is a good player and he will be back definitely. I have tried to phone him but it was hard to get him," Toure told the BBC.
Reports have suggested Campbell might walk away from football, while it has also been said that Football Association officials tried unsuccessfully to contact him when he was absent from a function with Tony Blair on Thursday.
Toure and Emmanuel Eboue are unavailable on Saturday while Kerrea Gilbert and Lauren are injured so Wenger could have done with Campbell being around.
"There is not a lot of choose from," the Arsenal manager admitted. "I don't know what I'll do about it at the moment, I must think.
"Do I put Gilberto there or keep (Mathieu) Flamini at the back? I don't know."

THE LONG dark night of the Sol began as he walked out of Highbury alone on Wednesday.
And the shadow of doubt that hangs over Sol Campbell's future as a footballer, let alone an England World Cup player, may never be dispelled.
Watching Campbell's ponderous, hesitant and catastrophic 45 minutes until his ignominious substitution against West Ham will have furrowed Sven Goran Eriksson's brow as much as it troubled Arsene Wenger.
For Wenger, the physical and psychological decline of his defensive kingpin could not have come at a worse time, with a spate of injuries emphasising the massive loss of Patrick Vieira's marauding midfield leadership.
And for Eriksson, even if he had mentally relegated the 31-year-old behind John Terry and Rio Ferdinand in his pecking order for the summer, the realisation the Arsenal man could disappear off the radar completely would have been a big blow.
Unless Campbell comes back rejuvenated, he would be too much of a gamble even for Eriksson, whose post-tournament departure means he has nothing to lose.
Wenger's heart-to-heart with Campbell yesterday ended with the defender told to take five days off to clear his head. He will miss tomorrow's visit to Birmingham,
But perhaps a man seemingly plagued by mental burdens as well as the groans of his body may no longer want to put himself on the line any more.
That is the big question and Wenger not wanting to hear the possible answer signified the Arsenal manager's fears that the crisis seemingly troubling his central defender parallels that suffered by his entire team at the moment.
Campbell has never been an ordinary player, never really part of the dressing-room banter. That solitary existence has always been part of his self-motivation.
Yet it has bred moments of inner doubt and turmoil that afflicted him in the past and seem to be combining to drag him into uncharted depths.
Suggestions Campbell has never recovered from the death of his father three years ago are wide of the mark. But the scars of fall-out with Wenger which saw him dropped in favour of Philippe Senderos for the FA Cup Final last May have not gone away.
To a degree, Campbell casts himself in the role of a lone fighter, battling the odds. Last season, he outlined that self-image and explained why he had resisted the temptation to quit 18 months ago.
"A lot of things have happened in my life," he said.
"It's been very difficult and if you look at it I've probably had more than most players.
"I could have given it up easily. I proved that. Things come and change your life. But football is still in the soul of me, I still live and breathe it and still love going out and playing and respect the game.
"I still love going out and performing and challenging myself. I've shown that through a lot of things in my life.
"I'm a perfectionist. I want to win and play well and move whatever team I'm playing for in the right direction. I had a couple of injuries and had heartaches in my life, my private life and my family.
"That's all part of growing up. You sit back and say to yourself 'I love this job'. I want to keep on going until I can see that the desire isn't there any more."
Yet the Campbell who disappeared down the Highbury tunnel and sat silently in the Arsenal dressing room before being called into Wenger's office at half-time on Wednesday did not look like a man who loved his job any more.
Indeed, as Campbell, famously the slowest changer in top-flight football, rushed out of the ground while his team-mates were slipping to their latest defeat, he appeared the embodiment of a man who wanted to be anything other than a Premiership superstar.
