Match Report

ROVERS were brought back down to earth this afternoon as West Bromwich Albion inflicted Mark Hughes' side first league defeat of 2006.

After the amazing highs of the victory over Manchester United on Wednesday night, it was the disappointing lows as Rovers never really got going against a lively Albion side.

Mark Hughes had warned before the game that the 4-3 victory over United would be worthless if it wasn't followed up with a result at the Hawthorns, but his side never really got going.

The home side were bright from the off and took the lead after just six minutes, Kevin Campbell chesting down Junichi Inamoto's cross in the area to fire low past Brad Friedel. The Rovers goalkeeper had no chance with that goal and could only stand and admire as Jonathan Greening hit a 20 yard stunner after 32 minutes.

Rovers were camped in the Albion half for long spells of the game in the second half, but they couldn't find a way through a resolute defence as their unbeaten league run came to an end.

Before the game Mark Hughes kept faith with the same starting eleven that had performed so well the previous Wednesday evening, deadline day signing Florent Sinama-Pongolle having to settle for a place on the bench.

Albrechtsen challenges Savage

Shefki Kuqi had the first effort on goal after two minutes, collecting a through ball from Savage, the Finnish international fired low from the edge of the area but Kuszczak saved low to his left.

But what followed will have had the manager scratching his head in frustration as the Baggies blew Rovers away.

Albion should have taken the lead on five minutes, Jonathan Greening getting the better of Morten Gamst Pedersen down the right, and his near post cross was somehow put wide by Kevin Campbell.

But a minute later, the former Arsenal striker who was celebrating his 36th birthday made amends, controlling a high ball from Inamoto on his chest he fired low past Friedel.

West Brom's forceful start almost earned them a second goal inside the opening ten minutes, Campbell's lay-off back to Greening saw the pitch open up for the Albion midfielder, he shot from distance but with sufficient effort that Friedel had to dive to his left to push away the shot.

Aside from Kuqi's early effort, Rovers had barely crossed the halfway line in that opening period, on a rare first half foray forward, David Bentley's clever cross found its way through to Steven Reid on the corner of the penalty area, but his effort was blocked for a corner by Robinson.

At the other end Junichi Inamoto intercepted Robbie Savage's wayward pass to run at the Rovers goal, he cut inside and fired towards goal left-footed, Brad Friedel being relieved to see it flash wide.

Rovers had half chances at the other end, but the second goal came just past the half hour. Michael Gray's hurried clearance only fell to Jonathan Greening, and with time and space the midfielder lifted the ball over Tugay before unleashing a stunning left-footed that flew into the top corner of Brad Friedel's goal.

Mark Hughes' side almost hit back immediately, but David Bentley's delicate lob from the edge of the area flew just wide of Tomasz Kuszczak's goal.

Rovers pressed on towards half-time, but couldn't find a way through a resolute defence.

Like against Manchester United on Wednesday night, Tugay was sacrificed at half-time by manager Mark Hughes, winger Brett Emerton was brought on in his place with Steven Reid moving into midfield, and Rovers started the better side, winning a couple of corners and free-kicks in dangerous positions, but they couldn't make anything of them.

Sinama-Pongolle rises to head

Florent Sinama-Pongolle was introduced ten minutes after the restart at the expense of Shefki Kuqi, he was immediately in the action almost playing Robbie Savage through but the Albion goalkeeper came out to collect.

With the home side two goals to the good they were more than happy to sit back and defend from the edge of their area, Rovers enjoying plenty of possession but unable to make any headway.

But Rovers had to be wary of the counter attack, Junichi Inamoto testing Brad Friedel with a low drive from the edge of the area.

Robbie Savage was inches away from scoring his first goal in a Rovers shirt, Steven Reid crossed into the area, Savage stuck out a boot but just failed to connect, Pedersen headed back across goal but no Rovers player could connect in the six yard box.

Rovers were always susceptible on the break and Nathan Ellington was guilty of wasting an excellent effort when through on goal, Nelsen just doing enough to quell the danger.

Sergio Peter was introduced with 14 minutes remaining, the young German setting up the best opportunity for Rovers, but Ryan Nelsen headed his cross wide.

It summed up Rovers day as all of Wednesday's hard work in the win over Manchester United was undone by this afternoon's defeat, Albion's first in the Premiership over Rovers.

WE'LL LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES - HUGHES

Robson won the battle of the former team-mates

ROVERS boss Mark Hughes was far from impressed with his sides performance as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the Hawthorns.

First half goals from Kevin Campbell and Jonathan Greening gave Rovers a mountain to climb, and although the visitors saw a lot of the ball, they couldn't make a difference with it.

But the Rovers boss has vowed that his side will learn from the mistakes of today and that they'll look to bounce back at Goodison Park next Saturday.

"We didn't start the game well, conceded two poor goals from our point of view and never really looked like getting back in the game from that point onwards," said a frustrated Hughes after the game.

"We had a lot of the play in the second half but West Brom are fighting for their lives, they had something to protect and they did that very well.

"We found it very difficult to create any clearcut chances in the second half even though we had the vast majority of the play. We didn't come out and display any urgency in our play, we started sloppily and found ourselves 2-0 down and couldn't get back in the game.

"It was a performance that was frustrating because we know we can do a lot better than that. We were the in-form team coming into this game and that is why it is so disappointing.

"We'll look at the game on Monday as we always do, we'll go through the game and take pointers from it and learn from our mistakes and go again. We'll learn from our mistakes and move on, we've a big game coming up against Everton and we'll concentrate on that.

"Lets hope our next unbeaten run starts Saturday."
