Alan Shearer says he would have no worries if Newcastle appointed a foreign manager.
The Magpies are on the lookout for a new boss after relieving Graeme Souness of his duties last week.
A host of names have been bandied around, including Martin O'Neill, Sam Allardyce, Steve Bruce and Alan Curbishley.
Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd hinted at the weekend that he wanted to wait for the right man, comments which suggested England chief Sven Goran Eriksson and Australian manager Guus Hiddink were in the frame.
Shearer had a sorry spell the last time Newcastle appointed a foreign coach, as he was cast into the shadows under Ruud Gullit before taking centre stage under Sir Bobby Robson.
The former England captain is not worried who the club appoint, provided they find the right man.
"As far as I am concerned it's not important if the next manager is British," said the Geordie talisman. "It just has to be the right man.
"I don't know what list they have but they just have to look at the best possible candidates to take over whoever they are.
"They need to get the appointment right, there's been a lot of managers at Newcastle and the next one is a very important decision - fingers crossed they will go on to win silverware.
"I'd assume they're working very hard behind the scenes but I think they will take their time if they need to.
"We've got to go out and be professional under Glenn Roeder who is looking after things now. We have to do the best we can until someone is appointed."
A number of pundits have put Shearer's name forward to succeed Souness, but he has no plans to apply for the post.
"I won't be the manager," he said. "That is for someone else to come in and do and hopefully do really well.
"I am finishing playing in May and I will have time with the family, play golf, do the media work and carry on taking my coaching badges."
