Serie A Preview: Inter-Juventus
Juventus are out to put the word end on Inter’s – or anyone else’s – slim hopes of taking the Serie A title away from them.
BACKGROUND
The Derby of Italy is upon us again and the stakes are pretty high once again, although they could’ve been even higher. In fact in midweek action two surprising results came these teams’ way: Inter, like every other Serie A team except Juve, lost in Florence to Fiorentina (2-1), and even more surprisingly Juve were held to a home draw (1-1) by relegation candidates Parma. It could be said then that both sides were more pleased with the other team’s result than their own. In fact if Juve had won like everyone would’ve expected, the scudetto race would be practically over and this match would have little significance, with 11 points separating the teams. As things stand now, Juve have a 9-point edge over Inter and will be perfectly happy with a draw, but a win would really kill off any lingering hopes Inter have of triumphing this year. And if that were to happen Inter couldn’t make any complaints, since Juve have looked like potential champions since the first matchday, while Inter as usual have had their missteps, the most recent of which in Florence where they blew a huge chance to truly re-open the scudetto race. That would have made this match even more of a cracker.
Recently in Italy there has been a lot of talk about poor refereeing which has consistently favoured the big teams. In fact Juventus were extremely lucky to beat Udinese as the ref made a string of serious mistakes, allowing an offside Del Piero goal and denying Udinese a clear penalty. Against Parma last Wednesday Juve received a last-minute gift of a penalty which, if Del Piero hadn’t blasted it on the crossbar, would have removed a lot of interest from this match. But Inter have also been helped in some matches this season, so they can’t make too many complaints about the refereeing themselves. In the past there have been many games between these two sides where Inter have almost always been damaged, and that’s something everyone agrees on (it’s not just my opinion). Overall though throughout these years Inter have never really shown a clear superiority in a Serie A season, and when they managed to do more or less what they were capable of (in most seasons they severely underachieve), see the seasons with Simoni and Cuper at the helm, they always had a Juventus side in front of them which proved to be an insuperable obstacle. The same goes for this season, in which Inter have done much better than usual so far, in fact they have scored more points than ever before in the Moratti era. But once again it isn’t enough, because Capello’s Juventus have proven to be a relentless points machine that has improved significantly on what already was an excellent first season. A significant figure to emphasize this is that today’s Juve have 10 points more than last season in which they ultimately won the scudetto after being constantly on top of the league from the first match to the last. Inter on their hand have 12 points more, which indicates a clear improvement from Mancini’s side, especially thanks to a much-improved defence. In any other year Inter would probably be top of the table, and it’s clear to everyone Inter now truly have everything to become a championship-winning team. For this season it’s probably already too late, as even Mancini has said Inter are going only for second place (though whether he truly means it is anyone’s guess), but with a win they would certainly restore some pride after the defeat they suffered in Turin, and probably make Juve work hard until the end to earn that first place.

Inter
Inter have everyone available as Martins is back from the Africa Cup, but Solari, Cristiano Zanetti, Ze Maria, Favalli (who’s injured), and new recruit Cesar haven’t been called up for this match.
Juventus
Zambrotta is an important absentee for Capello and Ibrahimovic isn’t in top shape, but for the rest Juve are at full strength.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Adriano (Inter)
He’s been correctly criticised recently because a striker of his fame and importance just needs to find the net more often. In a match like the one against Fiorentina Inter needs his class to break down a locked-up defence, and the many egoistic runs ending with pointless shots he made recently show he needs to mature and become more of a team player. Then again, he does usually show up in the truly important games, most recently when he was the hero with a brace in the derby of Milan. Despite his mediocre recent form he will probably start this match and will be under severe observation by fans and pundits alike.
Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus)
The symbol of Juventus is having a brilliant season and deserves to be in the starting lineup for Italy come the World Cup. While Capello has often left him on the bench in favor of Ibrahimovic, his recent form has just been too good to ignore as he’s been dispensing goals and crucial assists week in week out. Has scored important goals against the nerazzurri in the past as well.
POSSIBLE STARTING XI’s
Inter (4-4-2):
Julio Cesar; J. Zanetti, Cordoba, Samuel, Burdisso; Figo, Cambiasso, Veron, Stankovic; Adriano, Recoba.
Juventus (4-4-2):
Buffon; Balzaretti, Thuram, Cannavaro, Chiellini; Camoranesi, Vieira, Emerson, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero.
PREDICTION
It’s needless to say anything could happen, but if there’s one team that looks more likely to win it is Inter. They have been playing good, assured football recently but haven’t scored as much as they probably deserved. Against Fiorentina Inter had a good match but were unlucky and lost (which probably indicates it’s not “their” time yet), while Juve weren’t impressive at all against Parma and could’ve lost with a more capable referee. Ultimately though Juve, despite not being in excellent form, are probably smart enough as a team to avoid a defeat which would surely heat up the title race somewhat.
