Newcastle are reported to be ready to open talks with former Bayern Munich chief Ottmar Hitzfeld about the vacant managerial position at St James' Park.
Speculation is circulating that Hitzfeld is travelling to Tyneside on Monday to open discussions with Newcastle officials.
The Magpies are believed to have approached Hitzfeld about possibly replacing Graeme Souness at Newcastle.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is determined to bring in the right man to change their fortunes and insists he will leave no stone unturned to find the best candidate.
Glenn Roeder is currently in caretaker charge at Newcastle, and even though he has guided them to two successive wins, he is adamant he is not interested in the post full-time.
Hitzfeld is thought to be keen on a return to management after 18 months on the sidelines.
The 57-year-old is one of the most respected managers in European football after winning the UEFA Champions League with both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
Martin O'Neill, Sam Allardyce and Guus Hiddink have all been mentioned as possible successors to Souness and Shepherd is hoping to make an appointment in the near future.

Managerless Newcastle are set to approach Martin O'Neill this week, but the former Celtic boss could prefer to wait for the England job.
The Magpies are stepping up their hunt for a new boss to replace Graeme Souness and have reportedly made O'Neill their first choice.
He could command a 2.5million-a-year salary at St James' Park but the Ulsterman is also believed to be high on FA chief executive Brian Barwick's shortlist of candidates to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Sources close to O'Neill claim the 53-year-old would favour England over Newcastle as he would be able to spend more time with his sick wife Geraldine between international fixtures.
Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd will therefore step up his efforts to woo O'Neill, with the FA unlikely to make any significant moves until after their next board meeting on February 27.
Former Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld has also re-emerged as a leading contender to take over on Tyneside, with some reports claiming the 1997 and 2001 Champions League-winning coach is flying in for talks on Monday.

Two of Shepherd's top targets Martin O'Neill and Sam Allardyce have distanced themselves from the position and that means he is now having to look elsewhere for his man.
The news of Hitzfeld's possible arrival for talks will delight a large section of Newcastle fans who have been campaigning for his appointment as they believe he is the ideal person to take the club forward.
Hitzfeld, who is one of the most respected and successful managers in Europe, has been out of the game for the last 18 months as he wanted a break but the 57-year-old is now ready to return.
Shepherd says he is in no rush to make an appointment but news that Hitzfeld could jet in this week indicates the search is gathering pace.
