FOWLER WANTS TO GIVE RAFA A HEADACHE

Robbie Fowler has vowed to continue giving Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez a major headache over what to do about his future.

Fowler, on his 31st birthday, bagged the killer goal which left the Reds within one more win of securing third place in the Barclays Premiership as they beat Bolton 1-0.

With his contract running out, the Anfield support is seemingly willing Benitez to reward one of their favourites with a new deal, with Bolton boss Sam Allardyce having hinted that he would be interested in the former England striker if the "big numbers" were right.

And Fowler reckons he is putting severe pressure on the Spanish coach.

Fowler said: "It is not for me to say whether I have done well enough, personally I believe I have not done too badly, but the manager's decision is final.

"If he wants me to stay, great, but I have got to give him a bit of a headache by scoring goals and playing well.

"Hopefully I am doing that. Until the manager says otherwise, I will just have to go about my business and hopefully do what I do best.

"No-one has given me any indication yet, I spoke to the manager and know where I stand regarding a new contract, and until he tells me different I will keep plugging along."

Fowler's strike colleague Peter Crouch believes the pair are blossoming as a double act, and they linked impressively for the winner.

He said: "I was really pleased to see Robbie's effort go in, particularly at the time we scored it just before the break.

"We worked well together. I shouted, he flicked the ball on and then I was able to control it and give it back to him for the chance to shoot. And he's great in those situations, you know he'll hit the target.

"He is a great finisher in and around the box and if you give him a chance like that he will definitely stick it away.

"We compliment each other well and it seems to be working, and the more games we play the better it will be.

"We seem to be settling in nicely now and I am certainly enjoying playing alongside him. It seems to be working well."

Benitez has told Fowler he is reviewing summer signings before making a decision, but the local hero knows what he wants.

He said: "There are plenty of years still left in me.

"People have been saying over the years that I have been past it, but in games I have started for Liverpool I have a good record and I hope that continues.

"I've must keep plugging away and score as many goals as I can before the end of the season. Everyone knows where I want to be and until the manager says otherwise I'm happy to go along with things.

"Ever since I've been back the fans have been fantastic to me and I couldn't have asked for more from them. It was great to get an ovation when I came off, it means an awful lot."

Fowler's goal ensured a sixth straight victory and Benitez is more than aware of the intense pressure on him to give Fowler a new deal.

He said: "For a manager to see a player like Robbie, who is very important in the history of Liverpool, scoring another goal and working as hard as he is working now is the best news for me.

"It was a difficult game. It is hard to stop Bolton's long throws, long passes and goal kicks that get the ball into your box. You cannot control these things, just win the second ball.

"We were certainly better in the second period."

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce may well have to be content with Intertoto Cup football next term with qualification for the UEFA Cup now slipping away after four successive defeats.

He admitted that confidence had been drained from his side, saying: "It is a great shame, and we really have to get back to not conceding goals.

"The lads are feeling down, performances may be OK but ultimately if you get good performances and the results don't go for you it knocks confidence.

"Liverpool have a fabulous clean sheets record, and that is why they are where they are in the Premier League. Ours was very good, but we have lost that mentality recently.

"Confidence has been knocked and it would be a great shame if we did not finish this season with some reward after all we have put into it."

我諗科拿有充分理由留隊,只係賓尼迪斯未必需要有充分理由先可以趕走佢..

ROBBIE FOWLER has been told his goalscoring heroics may not be enough to
clinch him a long-term Liverpool deal.
The Anfield legend made it three goals in three starts with the winner
against Bolton on Sunday.

Fowler, 31, wants an extended contract having returned to Merseyside in
January on a six-month deal.

Yet boss Rafa Benitez is still to make a decision over the former England
striker’s future.

The Spaniard said: “Robbie is top class, no doubt about it. But you also
need pace and stamina levels if you want to win trophies.

“We are really happy with him because he is working so hard. But we have to
know exactly how many top-class players we need — and if he could be the
top-class one we are looking for.

“There is no doubting his quality, that is for sure. But we also have to
look at what his performances will be next season as well. Maybe you can
find fantastic players of, say, 23 years old who also have fantastic pace
and quality.

“It’s not that we don’t believe in him but this is a big club and we need
to look at different players as well.

“If you have different options, we have to make a decision. It’s really
important to have players of the passion he has so it is all in the balance.

“We need to put all those things together and weigh them up before we
decide.

“Robbie knows he needs to improve some things because he wasn’t playing
for some time and this is another level again. This is Liverpool Football
Club and we are trying to win every game.

“We know he has the quality and passion. Now we need to be sure of those
other things as well. He understands that and knows the situation.

“As soon as I can I’ll talk with him. It’s better for him not to talk at
the moment because it is important for him to stay focused.”
